Icthulhu is, in both manner and name, a reference to Cthulhu, the best known of author H.P. Lovecraft's Great Old Ones. Lovecraft, who wrote in the early 20th century, created many tales about these horrific deities. The best man could hope for from them was to be ignored. Horror afficionados generally regard Lovecraft as a master, and the tales of his Cthulhu Mythos as seminal works in the genre.
