Dark Heart - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Two mountain climbers are scaling a plateau. The boyfriend Billy gets over the top first. The woman slips and manages to pull herself up without help. When she pulls herself over the top she finds an alien structure atop the plateau. Spider-like mechanical creatures advance on her...

The military detects the extraterrestrial landing and moves in via helicopter. They rescue the woman and surround the alien structure. The spider creatures emerge and the soldiers' weaponry proves useless against them. The robots start taking apart the helicopters and consuming the material, and larger wolf-robots emerge from the structure. The soldiers call in emergency support. The Justice League is on their way. Batman, scanning the structure from the Batplane, discovers that it's growing larger as it consumes everything around it. Wonder Woman makes with General Eiling, who is in charge of the evacuation of the nearby town of Goldhanger. Batman fires a freezing missile at the structure, slowing its growth. The robot spiders descend the mesa and the Leaguers begin their assault.

Superman realizes the creatures are tunneling underneath them, making containment difficult. The robot spiders head for Goldhanger and J'onn puts the Watchtower in stationary orbit above the town. He explains to Eiling that the Watchtower can be converted into a single-shot fusion cannon by diverting all its power. The general is surprised to hear the League has that kind of weapon's capability. He moves his troops back and J'onn fires the cannon, blasting a huge trench around the mesa. Superman examines the spider robots and the structure and discovers each creature has a nanotech core that allows it to replicate. Superman heads to Boston to get the League's resident nanotech expert, the Atom.

The Atom is moving through a watery environment looking for a nanite construct. The creature attacks him and the Atom manages to get behind it, and then determines what that the liquid-chemical wash corrupted its control chip. The nanite tries to throw him off and the Atom is forced to smash its control circuitry. His assistant Katie informs him that Superman has arrived in the lab. The Atom enlarges from the microscopic, steps out of the petri dish. and greets Superman, who informs him the situation is critical. As they fly west, the Atom explains the concept of self-replicating nano-technology and warns that they're facing a mechanical nightmare capable of converting everything on Earth into itself. Batman calls to inform them the robots have bypassed the trench.

The Leaguers and soldiers try to stop the spider robots from spreading but the creatures keep replicating. Batman is out of armaments and the wolf robots leap onto the Batplane as he flies by. They start consuming the craft and Batman is forced to eject. They disable his ejection seat as he gets clear and Superman catches him before he crashes. They get to the ground and find Wonder Woman. The Atom explains what's happening and that they have to get to the core control. The device is the size of a molecule and the Atom is the only one who can reprogram it. The Batman gets the League into position and Wonder Woman takes the Atom in while half the League forge her a path.

When the robots threaten to overrun the League, Wonder Woman stores the Atom in her bustier to free both hand and then smashes a hole in the side of the alien structure. The Atom shrinks down to microscopic side and heads for the center of the structure. he gets to the core and starts accessing the information stored within. He determines that 50,000 years ago its builders launched it as a weapon at a distant planet where it consumed the entire sphere and moved on to the next world... and the next... and the next. The core creates tentacles to attack the Atom, shorting out his communication device in the process. The Atom tries to access the core's programming and finds the controls. He tries to smash it but discovers it’s protected by a forcefield. Using his size and weight controls, he enlarges himself but still can't destroy it. Spotting conduits feeding the core mattter for replication, the Atom interrupts the flow and starves it. The pressure backflow destroys the core. Outside, the robots shutdown as the structure destroys itself from within. The Atom enlarges himself, emerging from the debris.

Later, the military airlift the remains of the structure away. Eiling notes that the technology was powerful enough to almost defeat the Justice League, and observes that such a weapon might be necessary given that the League has a secret space-based fusion cannon. He warns that the government will be discussing the situation with the League some day, and then departs. The Atom worries if Eiling might go the same route as the structure's builders, and Superman assures him that the League will be there to keep history from repeating itself.
