Black Canary watches as some thugs break into a warehouse. She calls for Wildcat to back her up, but he's in the middle of a fight and apologizes, saying he'll be there in ten minutes. Black Canary doesn't believe him. Meanwhile, one of the thugs is watching a pay-for-view broadcast on his laptop computer. Black Canary drops in and attacks them. She disposes of most of them, but two drive away in their truck. She takes it out with her Canary Cry and then hears the broadcast finish on the laptop. It ends with Wildcat being declared the unbeaten champ.
At the satellite, Green Arrow is working out when Black Canary comes to see him. She introduces herself and offers to spar with him. He knocks her to the ground and subdues her, and she asks him for his help. Green Arrow figures something is up, but she refuses to explain until they're out of the Watchtower, and offers a wager. If she breaks his hold, he helps her. He agrees, and Black Canary easily frees herself.
As Black Canary and Green Arrow drive through the streets, Black Canary explains that Wildcat is involved in Metabrawl, where the fighters are chemically enhanced. They fight until one guy stands down. Wildcat used to be the heavyweight champion of the world, and now she's worried that he's having a mid-life crisis.
At the Metabrawl arena, Wildcat confronts the owner, Roulette, and tells her that he's quitting. She tries reverse psychology on him to get him to stay, but Wildcat refuses to play along. She notes that he has to put up with being one of the normal non-powered heroes in the League, and that he can find recognition and appreciation in Metabrawl. Roulette leaves him to think about it.
Black Canary and Green Arrow switch to their civilian identifies and she finds someone to sell them illegal tickets. He figures she just brought him along for his money, but pays anyway.
In the arena, Bloodsport and Electrocutioner are fighting when the heroes finally get in. Black Canary finds the locker room and they go in to confront Wildcat. He insists that he doesn't need help, and wouldn't want it from them if he did. He's a fighter, and all he does is fight. Black Canary insists that he's more than that, but Wildcat insists he can leave any time. However, he refuses, noting that the League doesn't need him Black Canary realizes he's angry at people and he shoves her away. When Green Arrow intervenes, Black Canary tells him to leave. Green Arrow leaves and Black Canary follows, insisting that she considers Wildcat a father. He realizes she doesn't want Wildcat thrown out of the League, and agrees to help her with Plan B. They both change into their heroic garb, and Green Arrow sneaks a few glances.
Metabrawl begins and Wildcat enters the ring against Atomic Skull. The fight begins and Atomic Skull lands the first punch. Wildcat fights back but Green Arrow intervenes, pinning him to a post and announcing that the show is over. The two heroes drop into the arena and take out Roulette's thugs. More supervillains enter the ring and Green Arrow nets them temporarily. However, Wildcat interrupts the fight and asks what they're doing. Black Canary asks him what side he's on, and he looks up to Roulette. She nods and he steps away, and the villains advance.
Green Arrow tells Black Canary to use her Canary Cry, but she warns that at this range, it can be prove fatal. The heroine gets an idea and calls up to Roulette, suggesting that she and Wildcat fight. If Black Canary wins, Roulette bans Wildcat from cage fighting. If she loses, she'll refuse to interfere. Wildcat objects but Roulette agrees and tells him he has no choice. She has her thugs send the heroes to the dressing room and keeps them there.
Roulette talks to Wildcat, who insists he won't fight heroes. She warns him that she'll evict him permanently if he doesn't fight, or if he throws the fight.
In her dressing room, Black Canary explains to Green Arrow that she has to fight Wildcat and beat him, to convince him to give up Metabrawl. Green Arrow wonders if she's pretending again, like when she was flirting in the Watchtower, but Black Canary insists she wasn't pretending. He then uses a gas arrow to knock her out, and tells Roulette that he'll be fighting in Black Canary's place.
A few minutes later, Roulette introduces the new fighter. Wildcat refuses to fight, noting that Green Arrow can't hold his own. Roulette won't take no for an answer, and goes back to the control booth. Green Arrow taunts Wildcat into attacking him and the fight begins. Meanwhile, Black Canary wakes up and realizes what's going on. She enters the arena but Roulettes thugs restrain him. Green Arrow informs her that he's teaching Wildcat a lesson, and then goes back to being beaten. He calls the boxer a has-been and Wildcat responds by beating him to within an inch of his life. Green Arrow continues to taunt him, and Wildcat lands one last punch that knocks him across the ring. He checks his opponent, and realizes that Green Arrow is dead. As the crowd cheers, Black Canary breaks free and runs into the ring. She punches Wildcat and asks what he's done. Roulette tells her that Wildcat has taken the fight to a brand new level. Wildcat tells her that he's done and walks out.
As Black Canary kneels over Green Arrow's body, admitting what he did was both macho and sweet, he comes back to life and explains he used a stunner to simulate death. Wildcat comes back and admits that his plan worked. As they leave, Roulette tells Wildcat that he'll be back in a month, begging for another chance to fight. Black Canary goes into the ring and unleashes her Canary Cry, bringing it down.
Later on the Watchtower, Wildcat apologizes to Black Canary and admits that the thought of killing someone knocked him back to his senses. She isn't convinced, and escorts him to J'onn J'onzz for a telepathic examination. As he goes in, Green Arrow hobbles by and says he’s doing better. Black Canary is skeptical, but offers to get coffee with him… and he tells her that she’s buying.
