Episode Recap

The Justice League is battling a group of villains, the Extremists. When one of them injures Vixen, an angry Green Lantern checks on her and then subdues Green Lantern. They check on Shayera, who is being choked, but Batman distracts the villain long enough for Shayera to deliver the final blow. As the police take the villains away, a man approaches Shayera and says he's been hoping to talk to her. He introduces himself as Carter Hall and takes an ancient weapon out of his hands. Batman quickly disarms him and determines the weapon is Thanagarian. Carter explains that he found it during an archaeological dig and wants Shayera to help him determine how it came to earth eight thousand years ago. The League takes the weapon and Carter offers Shayera a dinner. After a glance at Green Lantern, she accepts. Vixen, noticing the exchange, is less than thrilled. As the League departs, Carter turns away... and his shadow follows a few seconds later.

At the Metro Tower, Batman verifies the age of the weapon and Shayera recognizes it from a similar period in Thanagarian history. Shayera leaves on her date, puts on a dress, and runs into Green Lantern in the elevator. He's taken back at her out of her battle gear but they're interrupted when Batman arrives and tells him that Carter Hall was originally Joseph Gardner and had his name legally changed. Five years ago he claimed that aliens landed in Ancient Egypt, and has been banned from several anti-Hawkgirl websites. Batman figures that he's a stalker, not just a fan. Batman goes over footage of Justice League battles with Hawkgirl and reveals that Carter was at all of the crime scenes. Green Lantern wants to get involved but Shayera insists it's none of his business. After she leaves, Green Lantern notes that they saw a future where he and Shayera had a son, and Batman wonders why he's still there without Shayera.

Shayera takes a Javelin to Egypt and meets Carter, and together they enter the tomb he was excavating. They go inside and Shayera notices a female statue. She almost sets off a needle trap and Carter gets her out of the way. As they go inside, they're unaware that Batman is following them via a tracking device. He avoids a spike trap and proceeds onward, unaware that a figure made of shadow is following him. Shayera and Carter go to the main temple and he shows her an obelisk, then tells her he brought her there under false pretenses. He dons a Thanagarian flight harness and says that their destiny is to be together: he's Katar Hol. Shayera thinks he's nuts but Carter insists their souls have been bound together.

Batman, approaching, avoids another trap and finds himself confronting the shadow figure. His Batarangs pass right through it but it can turn solid to attack him. After a brief struggle, the figure throws Batman into the abyss and takes the tracking device.

Carter shows Shayera an Absorbacon and explains he found it four years ago and it restored the memories of his life in 6600 B.C. Two Thanagarians aboard a spaceship were sucked through a wormhole and landed in Egypt. Stranded, they used their technology to improve the local civilization and turned it into a paradise. Some factions resented the aliens and a priest engineered their death. Carter reveals a secret chamber containing the Thanagarian spaceship. Shayera explains the Absorbacon is a telepathic database and transferred false memories into his mind. He tries to force her to touch the Absorbacon and she throws him off. The shadow figure emerges, splitting into two and attacking Carter and Shayera and rendering them unconscious.

Carter and Shayera wake up and Shayera recognizes the figure as the Shadow Thief. He tortures Shayera for fun and explains that he's been following Carter in the hopes of finding the secret trove of Thanagarian artifacts, which he can sell on the black market. He needs Carter to disable the traps so he can enter the burial chamber with the most valuable pieces, and prepares to torture Shayera. Carter gives in and shows him how to disable the traps. However, Batman arrives and tries to free Shayera, but Shadow Thief deflects his Batarang. Batman stuns his opponent with a flash grenade but the traps activate and Thanagarian robot mummies come to life, attacking them. As the chamber starts to collapse, the Shadow Thief goes into the burial chamber and a mummy attacks Shayera. The wall weakens enough for her to pull free. She goes after Shadow Thief and activates her battle mace, driving him back. Hawkman is waiting for him outside with a torch, and Batman with a flare. They surround him but Shadow Thief descends through the floor. The spaceship falls into the abyss as the chamber crumbles, and Batman falls after it. Shayera rescues Batman and Carter goes back for the Absorbacon. Shayera tells him it doesn't matter but when he ignores her, she knocks him unconscious and flies out of the tomb as it collapses behind her.

Outside, Shayera explains that the Absorbacon was intended for Thanagarian minds, and it could damage a human mind. Batman offers J'onn's services as a telepath but Carter insists that he doesn't need any help. He insists they are reincarnations and he loves Shayera. He knows all about her and says she'll eventually accept their destiny. Carter assures her he can wait a little longer and departs. Shayera finds the transmitter that Batman hid on her but he says it's Carter he didn't trust. She wonders about the possibility of reincarnation and he wonders if she really believes in it or not.

Amidst the rubble of the tomb, two mummies lay buried... holding hands.
