The Cultural Divide
While the main theme of this series, the love between a brother and sister, would be considered taboo in the West, it is not considered to be such a terrible thing in Japan. However, what is considered strongly taboo in Japan caused this episode to go unaired during its initial run on TV Asahi. In fact, this episode never aired on the primary network, instead being aired two months later, on July 7th, 2004, on KIDS STATION. The reason that it did not air was because it dealt with the issue of frigidity in the wife. Makie refused Zenzou's continued advances once Nanoka had been born. This led to Zenzou taking a mistress and eventually resulted in the divorce of Koushirou and Nanoka's parents. While the West may not find this subject to be taboo, in Japan it is one that is seldom discussed.
