Herr Baumann is found mortally wounded, the result of a break and enter into his residence. When he eventually succumbs to his wounds in hospital the only clue he can leave about his killer are the words 'country house' and 'woman' .
All the leads point to a man who is painting a nearby house. This man has a shameful secret which he is trying to hide, plus he also has a criminal record and things are looking very grim indeed for him.
