| Fun, surprising and more than it seems

This is one of those rare TV shows that appears to be one thing (in this case, sci-fi) but is in reality this plus much more. At a trivial level, Kyle XY looks a great deal like Beverly Hills 90210 - teen high school angst, with an added dollop of mysterious science. But the show quickly became more than this - it has layers of mystery, romance and science fiction that somehow manage not to fight one another. In fact, these elements seem to work together to produce satisfying and often touching stories.
There are elements and characters that seem overplayed (Amanda's mother is a good example), and story lines that require disbelief to be suspended beyond reasonable expections (Andy's cancer cure, and the implication that Kyle did it), but on balance Kyle XY is a fun, surprising show that plumbs depths significantly beyond the expected.
