Cully Wilson [1959-1964], played by Andy Clyde
Cully Wilson is an elderly, eccentric bachelor farmer and nature lover who made his first appearance in the eighth season. Cully was scripted into many episodes, and, because he was, Paul's participation was slightly curtailed with producers believing two adult males on the show would overwhelm the audience. Many episodes in the later Martin seasons feature only Cully, Timmy, Ruth, and Lassie. Paul is often said to be in distant fields or away from home on business. Cully and Timmy become great friends and often take on conservation projects such as protecting a pristine forest area from development. When the Martins emigrate to Australia in the opening episode of the eleventh season, Lassie is left in the care of Cully. Cully however has a sudden and serious heart attack, and the dog is given to Corey Stuart, a Forest Ranger. A new plot theme then develops with Lassie being taken off the farm and sent into the wilderness with a series of Forest Rangers. Cully and the Martins never appear on the show again.

Sylvester "Porky" Brockway [1954-1957], played by Joey D. Vieira
"Porky" Brockway is Jeff Miller's best friend and neighbor. His father Matt Brockway is Gramps' checkers-playing partner and his mother Birdie appears in several episodes during the first three seasons. Porky 's basset hound Pokey made so many appearances that the crew and cast thought of him as a regular. Porky and Jeff, and Lassie and Pokey, have many adventures together.
Porky was portrayed by Donald Keeler (Joey D. Vieira in real life). His stage name was borrowed from his famous aunt, Ruby Keeler. In Lassie, Keeler made his debut in the first season's "The Lion" and his last appearance in "Timmy's Family" of the 1957 fourth season. Keeler and Rettig appeared as great pals in the fictional world of the show but off camera the two boys were constantly feuding.
Keeler arrived at the studio one day with his hair cut in an extremely short style called a buzz cut. Producers were furious. A wig was fashioned for him and an episode about a hair cut was hastily put together. Keeler was ordered never to get his hair cut again without permission from the studio. Keeler appeared in later life as Joey D. Vieira in several films including The Patriot with Mel Gibson.. |
