Gramps: A fellow named William Tell shot an apple off his boy's head with a bow and arrow.

William Tell was a 14th century Swiss patriot who was forced to shoot an apple off his son's head as punishment for slighting the Austrian tyrant Gessler. Tell used a crossbow rather than a bow and arrow.
