In the Miller farmyard, Jeff is shooting at a target with bow and arrow. He begs Gramps to take him bow hunting. Gramps has chores to do and declines. Jeff sets off with Lassie.
Jeff and Lassie prowl about in the woods. Lassie suddenly becomes anxious. Jeff peers over a bush and sees a lion resting in the grass. Jeff and Lassie run home.
Jeff arrives in the farmyard. Gramps will give no credence to Jeff's report of a lion in the woods. Ellen pokes her head out the kitchen door to tell Jeff his pal Porky is coming over to spend the night. Jeff shows little interest in Porky's impending visit; he can think only of the lion in the woods. Gramps finally agrees to accompany Jeff to the place where he saw the lion. All they find is a cow chewing her cud.
At home again, Jeff finds Porky has arrived for his overnight visit. While the boys have lunch together in the kitchen, Ellen receives a phone call from her mother. Ellen's mother has had a bad fall and Ellen decides to join her for a few days as she recovers. Ellen asks Gramps to drive her to Capitol City. Jeff and Porky will be alone on the farm until Gramps returns in the evening. Ellen says good-bye to the boys and drives away with Gramps. The lion stalks through the Miller gate.
Night has fallen and Jeff and Porky are in the kitchen reading a book about lions. They discover that lions sometimes eat humans! Lassie begins pawing nervously at the back door. The phone rings. Gramps has called to tell Jeff the car has broken down and he won't be home for several hours.
Jeff and Porky begin preparing dinner. Lassie continues to paw anxiously at the back door. The boys peer out the window but see nothing. They return to their dinner. A deafening roar is heard and the boys jump from their chairs.
Jeff calls Jenny, the telephone operator. Jenny won't believe Jeff has seen a lion. Jeff hangs up, dejected over the fact that no one believes him.
The lion roars. Jeff calls Jenny again and tells her bank robbers are trying to get into the house. Jenny laughs. At that moment she receives another phone call. The call alerts her to an escaped circus lion in the area. Realizing Jeff was telling the truth, she directs the constable and the circus workers to the Miller farm.
Jeff and Porky peer out the window. The lion is stalking about the farmyard. The boys throw a raw roast into the yard. The lion eats it, batters the kitchen door down, and rampages through the kitchen while the boys cower in a corner.
Lassie lures the lion into Jeff's bedroom. The boys flee to the barn through the kitchen door.. Lassie jumps from the bedroom window with the lion right behind her. Lassie gains the safety of the barn and the boys slam the door. The constable and the circus workers arrive to capture the lion.
Hours later, Gramps arrives home. The excitement has subsided. Gramps is angry to find the kitchen in a shambles and won't accept the boys' story about an escaped lion. Jeff hands Gramps the $100.00 given him by the circus workers for having captured the lion. Gramps stares dumbfounded.
