Garth and Jimmy are seen driving over the road to the Holden Ranch They approach a flock of sheep. Garth stops and introduces Jimmy to the shepherd Dominic. Lassie spots a stray lamb, rushes away, and brings the lamb back to the flock. The shepherd admires the dog. Garth and Jimmy continue on to the ranch.
At the ranch, Garth introduces Andy Lopez to Jimmy and tells them to bunk together. The two boys hit it off at once and head toward the house.
Later in his office, Garth tells Jimmy all about the ranch and its purpose. Jimmy is impressed and thanks Garth for inviting him to visit. Jimmy goes off to bed and takes Lassie with him.
In bed, Andy tells Jimmy that he's been on the ranch since his parents' deaths four years ago. Andy tells Jimmy to go to sleep. Andy sleeps but Jimmy remains awake contemplating his situation with happiness.
The next day, Lassie plays with Jimmy in the yard. Garth wonders if Jimmy feels comforatable on the ranch. Andy tells Garth that Jimmy is doing fine. Garth thinks Jimmy lacks confidence.
Garth invites Jimmy to take a horse ride with him. Jimmy tells Garth he's never ridden a horse and declines. Garth wants to ride double and encourages Jimmy to come along. They are seen riding together.
Lucy is in a field tending her pet wolf. Jimmy and Garth approach. Lucy has never met Garth but knows who he is. She says he looks like a good neighbor.
Garth introduces Jimmy and Lassie to Lucy. Jimmy is shy. Lucy tells Jimmy she is deaf. Lucy invites Jimmy to go exploring with her and then to have lunch at her house. Garthe says good-bye. Jimmy and Lucy walk away.
Lucy and Jimmy walk through the fields. Both children talk about their disabilities. Lucy says she's been deaf since the age of 5. Jimmy says he's been crippled all his life. Lassie and Lucy's pet wolf Mountie bound away through the fields for a run and some playtime
The children sit in the shade and talk about personal things. Lucy is falling in love. Lucy asks what the world sounds like. Lucy tells Jimmy he's shy. The chilren are sorry about their disabilities. Lucy is optimistic though. She says she can talk more than other chilren! They set off to find their pet animals.
Lassie and Mountie play among the fields. Mountie's leash becomes tangles on a fallen log. Lassie tries to free the wolf but fails. She hurries off to find the children.
A crow taunts Mountie. Twisting and turning, Mountie frees himself. The children hurry along anxiously and find the log where Mountie was trapped. Lucy is dismayed. She suggests they go back to her house and get her horse to look for Mountie.
The shepherd is tending his flock when he spies Mountie running through the fields. He gets his rifle and shoots the wolf. The wolf is seriously injured but manages to get up and lope away. Lassie finds the injured wolf and hurries away to find the wounded animal a safe haven. She calls Mountie to a cave in the hillside. The wolf enters the cave and beds down. Lassie watches from the cave entrance and sees the shepherd on horseback searchihg for the wolf.
