Lucy and Jimmy are on horse back and looking for Mountie. Lucy is very upset.
Lassie and Mountie wait in the cave. The shepherd prowls about outside and, finding nothing, departs. Lassie and Mountie are safe for the moment. But Lassie knows Mountie needs help and hurries away
Lucy and Jimmy find the tracks of the two animals and renew their pursuit.
Lassie races over the fields. The children near the cave. Mountie cries. Jimmy directs Lucy's attention to the cave entrance. The children enter the cave and find Mountie. Lucy stays with Mountie while Jim rides for help on Lucy's horse. Jim is uncertain about riding the horse alone but he goes, knowing Lucy and Mountie need his help.
Lassie returns to Holden Ranch. Garth hurries away with Lassie.
Jimmy is thrown from Lucy's horse. He cries. Then decides Lucy must be helped and he remounts her horse. He rides off.
Jimmy meets the shepherd Dominic and asks his help. They ride off together. At the cave Lucy waits. Garth arrives and finds Lucy in tears. Lucy explains the terrible situation. Jimmy and the shepherd arrive. Lassie tries to comfort Lucy. When the truth comes to light, Dominic apologizes to Lucy and asks her forgiveness. Lucy is cold. Dominic fetches his first aid kit to remove the bullet. Garth explains to Lucy that Dominic had no way of knowing Mountie was a tame wolf. Lucy says she understands. Dominic returns. Lucy and Jimmy wait outside the cave while the men tend to Mountie's wound.
Lucy tells Jimmy she will never forget what he did in her hour of need. Jimmy says he had to try. In the cave Mountie has been tended. Garth leaves the cave to tell Lucy that Mountie will be all right and he will be taken to the animal park. Garth and Jimmy make a stretcher.
In the cave, Lucy thanks Dominic. Dominic thanks Lucy for forgiving him. Lassie helps with the stretcher.
Garth tells Jimmy it took courage to do what he did and he's proud of him. Jimmy feels more confidence and more personal worth than ever before.
