How many dogs played Lassie?
Six dogs played Lassie during the nineteen year run of the series: 1) Pal, 2) Lassie Junior, 3) Spook, 4) Baby, 5) Mire, and 6) Hey Hey.
Pal appeared in the first episode and one other first season (1954-1955) episode. His son Junior appeared through the Jeff years and two of the Timmy years. Spook appeared briefly during the 1960 season but was never comfortable before the cameras and was replaced by Baby. Baby had large eyes and became the best known and best loved of the Lassies. He appeared in the show during the Timmy years and two of the Ranger years. Mire appeared in the last few Ranger years and the Lassie Alone year while Hey Hey appeared during the two syndicated Holden Ranch years.
Weren't there dozens of dogs playing Lassie? Each one being taught one specific trick like jumping through a window, tugging a rope, opening a door, etc
Not at all. The six dogs that appeared through the series run were talented, well trained performers able to handle the various demands of the scripts. Only in shots where Lassie appeared in the distance - running through a field, for example - were "non-Lassie" dogs used.
Where was the Miller/Martin farm?
On the outskirts of a fictional town called Calverton and 50 miles from Capitol City. The state was never specified. The earliest years suggested a temperate midwestern location while the late Timmy years suggested a southwestern location.
Who first played Ruth Martin?
Cloris Leachman played Ruth Martin during the last half of the 4th season (1957-1958), first appearing in the episode called "Transition." Leachman wasn't happy playing the role and refused to renew her contract at the end of the season. June Lockhart replaced Leachman.
