I just love Law & Order. It gets better each and every season. The stories become more compelling and the legal tricks used by both the prosecution and the defence get more interesting.
My favourite character on the "Law" side (and overall) is Lennie Briscoe. Jerry Orbach was, in my opinion, the best actor in the show's history. His dry, sardonic wit is very funny and it makes the show worth watching. His acting was always top-notch despite the fact that, in all honesty, he was not presented with many significant acting challenges throughout his 12 years on the show. I was deeply saddened when I learned of his death in late December 2004. His presence, both on the show and in real life, is sorely missed by many. While it is still great, it is not as good as it was while he was on the series. Orbach was simply a brilliant actor, easily one of the best of his generation. He was definitely the best actor in Law & Order. In fact, Sam Waterston and Steven Hill are the only other actors on the series who even come close to him but he still surpasses them both by a very wide margin. His brilliant one-liners always make me laugh and he was very well partnered with Jesse L. Martin for five years.
On the "Order" side, Jack McCoy is my favourite character. He is a rather unconventional and far better than his predecessor, Michael Moriarty, who played Ben Stone. He is far more ruthless, but in a good way, and I love the way he often bends, but never breaks, the rules to get a conviction. This makes him a far more compelling, interesting and unpredictable compared to Stone who was fairly conventional in terms of his prosecution style. It is easy to see why he was held in contempt several times. Some of his lines rival Orbach's such as "So you're not a psychologist, you just play one on the radio?" Classic line that made me laugh out loud and just goes to show you his unconventional style as he more or less mocking a witness. Easily the second greatest actor in the show's history. It is easy to see why he was Oscar nominated for Best Actor. I just hope he stays with it until it ends. Him leaving (which is rumoured) would be its death knell without a doubt.
Unfortunately, I have only seen episodes from Seasons 1-3 and Seasons 11-14. I would love to see Seasons 4-10. I can't wait it see some episodes with all of three of my favourite characters: Lennie Briscoe, Jack McCoy and easily the best DA, Adam Schiff.
