Goren and Eames investigate the death of a museum curator and an art authenticator who are found dead in what was set up to look like a murder-suicide, where the detectives follow the clues and realise that both deaths are linked to the sale of numerous art forgeries. The investigation leads to a dead end when they are unable to locate the forger, that is until Goren seeks the help of another forger.

The body of Lois Romney is found in a hotel room which Goren and Eames link her to Dale Van Acker, a junkie and son of wealthy scion Priscilla Van Acker. When a doctor is slain just outside of the mayor's residence, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) initially suspect one of the victim's mentally afflicted relatives but their investigation also leads to a crooked halfway house whose operators run up huge and unnecessary bills at the expense of the government. However, the murder clues soon shift to point to another possible culprit (guest star Chrisopher Evan Welch) who might have been conducting shameful experiments on the home's tormented patients. Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B. Vance also star.

Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) poke around an insurance scam ring that passes off scrubbed-up homeless men for phony French executives -- and when the poor men turn up murdered, the suspects collect on lucrative life-insurance policies. However, after the cops recruit an extremely peculiar industry fraud expert (guest star Mark Linn-Baker, "Perfect Strangers") to help them profile the culprits, they are surprised to find one of the ringleaders slain in his apartment. When a woman is found slain at home, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) immediately focus their investigation on her son (guest star Adam Storke) -- a paroled murderer who lived with her and knew that she suspected his involvement in an earlier, notorious sexual assault. However, new DNA evidence in the rape case reveals that one of the police detectives (guest star Mike Starr) might have forced a confession from the teens who were convicted years before.
