When the battered body of a murdered 5-year-old girl in foster care is discovered, Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) must explore a complex array of family connections in their search for a motive and murderer. The child's biological mother (guest star Erika Lavonne) had been frantically trying to regain custody of all her daughters from the foster mother (guest star Kathleen Wilhoite, NBC's "ER") and grandmother (guest star Piper Laurie, "Carrie," "Twin Peaks") responsible for the child at the time of her death. As the focus of the investigation turns to the girl's socially withdrawn foster brother, Captain Cragen (Dann Florek) attempts to reach the 14-year-old with the help of some video game camaraderie. Richard Belzer, Ice-T and Stephanie March also star.
