The discovery of a man and woman stabbed during a seemingly romantic park rendezvous leaves Detectives Benson and Stabler with the gruesome job of identifying the victims -- a difficult task as the woman's head and hands are missing. However, when further analysis of the park reveals that the crime scene was staged, the detectives focus their investigation on the female victim and her career as a Manhattan Federation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals officer, which leads them to a variety of associates on both sides of the animal rights issue.
