Possessed - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A man named Patrick goes to the apartment of his girlfriend, Larissa, after she never showed up at work, and she is not answering her cell phone or the door. He finds her in the apartment after breaking when he realizes something suspicious is going on. She is not alone; there is a strange obese man wearing little more than a mask. He does not try to hide the fact that he is a rapist, but a struggle ensues between the two, and Patrick is injured significantly. Larissa has several small nicks which are determined to be from a razor of some kind. She had been shaved from the neck down, presumably to preserve the appearance of an innocent small girl.

When Patrick is interviewed, he says that the two of them have been dating for three months, but they have known each other for two years. He tells the detectives that he tried to get her to go out with him but she had issues with trust for a long time. Larissa is said to have been found dressed in panties which read “Brandy”. Two other girls were raped, both of them were younger. He had called them the same name, and this confused the two of them, saying that that is not their name. He drew a birth mark on them that bears a striking resemblance to who is discovered to be the original “Brandy”. A letter is discovered, bearing a symbol revealed to be that of a group of pedophiles known as “Coventry.” They have underground pedophile training centers. The perp films them with a voice masking ability. The photo they tracked down had the thumbs of the perp, from which they can extract prints from a finger.

They storm into his house and they discover emails that trace where he is located--it turns out that he is located at the very hospital where Larissa is being treated. They go back to the hospital after calling to alert them of the pedophile and rapist, telling them to seal the place off. They go to the hospital and they catch him in the act. He maintains his innocence, as Detective Stabler beats on him before he is pulled off. The perp took video of her at the hospital before he knocked her out. This is not the first time it has happened. This rapist has delusions that make him believe he is an innocent man. The man he wishes to emulate is an older man, but he nearly beat the man to death. Larissa later reveals that she was saved by a mere teenage boy who was kept in the same house she was held captive in all those years ago. The man whose name is Underwood, was acquitted the first time due to lack of evidence. Underwood is now a “civil rights attorney”.

Underwood is let go, and Larissa runs into him after getting out of a cab. Stabler and Benson tell him to keep walking, and Larissa vomits on Stabler. It had been sixteen years since the traumatic experience. They tell her that they are going to need Daniel to testify if they are going to put him away for life. She offers to watch the video to see if she can determine where she was held. She tells the detectives she remembers empty peanut butter jars that Daniel wrote letters in, just in case his parents are ever able to find him. There is also a wrist band, which they find. When they locate Daniel, he is now a member of the Coventry. He is holding a boy over a railing when they find him. Stabler talks him out of dropping the boy. When they interview him, they realize he has detached from reality. He thinks that he has been saved. They find Underwood’s manifesto which reads like an instruction manual veiled as a fictional novel. There are explicit instructions which can be used in the trial, but the evidence and the case is thrown out because of the fact that the case is tried under the charge of conspiracy. This falls apart because the other co-conspirator is now dead after he had bragged while in prison about what he had done. Larissa reaches out to Daniel. He blames her for not coming back, but she convinces him that he can make it right by putting a guilty man in prison for the rest of his life.

At the conclusion of the episode, Larissa has shot Underwood dead. One last victim is heard crying, and she is discovered hiding in the shower. Larissa is not charged because of “defense of a third person”.
