Kahlan and sister Dennee attempt to get to the Boundry to go through at give Richard the Book of Counted Shadows. On their journey they must escape from The Quad, a band of soldiers ruled by Darken Rahl. When Dennee is shot, she urges Kahlan to proceed, giving her the book. As Kahlan leaves her sister, she enters the boundry. Four of the Quad follow after her. In Hartland, Woodsguide Richard Cypher spots Kahlan being chased by the Quad.

Now The Seeker has to decide if he finds his pursuer and accomplishes his destiny or sage the "Listener."

After capturing Richard, Denna attempts to coerce him into joining forces with the evil Darken Rahl.

To prevent the box from falling into the hands of Darken Rahl and giving him the ultimate power he so desperately craves, Zedd disguises himself as an entertainer in order to infiltrate Milena's castle. With the help of a little slave girl named Rachel, Zedd plots to replace the coveted box with a fake. Meanwhile, Richard and Kahlan learn that Darken Rahl intends to personally retrieve the Box of Orden from the Queen.

With Richard's help, Kahlan disguises herself as a Mord'Sith to rescue her pregnant sister Dennee – who is also a Confessor – from a D'Haran prison. When Dennee gives birth to a son, Richard is horrified to learn that it's mandated that male offspring of Confessors be put to death and resolves to save the child, putting him at odds with Kahlan.
