The Beantown Bailout Job - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
At Boston Assurance, Nate returns to work as an insurance investigator and glosses over what he's been working on for the last year. Distracted by the office environment, he quickly leaves.

Banker Matthew Kerrigan is driving his daughter Zoe and trying to explain that the police can't help them. He asks her to just drop it, and admits that he doesn't have any good choices.

Nate walks by a bar and considers getting a drink, and finally decides to go in. Matt is driving by and his accelerator suddenly kicks in by itself. Nate watches as the car shoots over him and crashes, and then runs over to help. Matt tells him to get Zoe out and Nate obliges, while another man comes over, supposedly to help. However, the man grabs Matt's case and runs away, and Nate goes back to get Matt out. He pulls him away just in time as the car explodes.

Later, Nate visits Matt at the hospital and meets Glen Leary, the banker's boss. Lt. Bonnano with the state police is there, and thanks Nate for his efforts. Nate wonders why the state police are involved, but Bonnano doesn't answer. Once he leaves, Leary explains that Matt set up a meeting with Bonnano, but their bank, First Boston Independent, is going under, Leary claims that Matt was taking it hard and drinking heavily. As Leary leaves, Zoe tells Nate that there was something wrong with the car and asks him not to tell Bonnano. Nate agrees and tells her to get some sleep.

Sophie is the lead actress at a performance of The Sound of Music. Nate goes there to see her and finds Parker buying a ticket. Hardison is there and surprised to see her, and they're both surprised to see Eliot there. They all awkwardly reintroduce each other and talk about what they've been doing since they broke up in Los Angeles. Sophie comes in and greets them, and then goes back to begin the performance.

Afterward, the team goes to a bar and Sophie is less than thrilled at the reviews of her performance. Eliot is surprised to learn that Nate has stopped drinking, and Nate explains that he rents a condo above the bar. Meanwhile, Parker suggests that they cheer Sophie up by stealing something. Nate objects but everyone else is enthused and admits their lives haven't been so great since they broke up. Hardison complains that Nate broke them, and they all admit that they couldn't go back to being bad guys after being good guys. They don't want to move on and insist that Nate was the best, but he tells them he's not a thief and he has his life back. As he goes, Parker says that they didn't get a chance to tell Nate, and Eliot wonders what they didn't tell him.

Nate goes up to his condo and the man from the crash attacks sneaks up on him. Fortunately, Nate spots his reflection and fights back, and Sophie arrives to distract the attacker. He gets away and Sophie accidentally knocks Nate out. When he wakes up the next morning, he finds Parker at his bedside, dressed as a nun and eating cereal. The others are also there, making themselves at home. He tells them to get out, but they tell him they found the hospital number in his pocket and discovered that he saved the Kerrigans. Hardison has identified the attacker from the security camera, and Eliot found Matt's empty briefcase near the intersection. Further security camera footage reveals the attacker meeting with Leary at the bank, and then Leary and an unidentified man went into the safe deposit box where there are no cameras. Nate still insists that they leave and tells them that they're on their own if they do anything. Once he's gone, Eliot says he's staying for the sports channels.

Hardison and Parker pose as a priest and a nun and get a safety deposit box. The teller shows them to the vault and Parker breaks into Leary's box using the key that she "borrowed" and duplicated from the teller. As she works, Hardison says that he did look for her during the last six months. They get the box open and take the contents back to Nate's condo. Nate is talking to Zoe on the phone when he discovers that Hardison is still there with even more stuff. He tries to show Nate that Matt discovered that in the last six months, Leary took out crazy loans and refinanced high-interest mortgages, all worth a couple of millions. Nate recognizes a photo of his attacker as Tommy O'Hare, part of the local O'Hare mob run by Brandon O'Hare. They call Eliot, who is going through the O'Hare records at a warehouse. Tommy and his thugs come at Eliot, who takes down O'Hare and then his two men.

Back at the condo, Eliot shows the team what he's found: old 80s clothing that demonstrates they are fake businesses. Nate finally gets involved and explains that the O'Hare mob set up shell companies 30 years ago to launder their money and come out clean on their taxes to avoid government prosecution. Leary is in the mob's pocket, and they're ruining the bank's financials because they know the government will bail them out. Nate "hypothetically" suggests the Turnabout Con, but the others note that it will take five people to run the con. He agrees to do just this one job and assigns them their positions, and then goes to arrange a meeting with Brandon.

Parker and Hardison pose as state police officers and meet with Leary. They tell the banker that Kerrigan's car accident was no accident. Meanwhile, Eliot attaches small wads of plastic explosives to the outside bank wall. Hardison admits that sometimes they just go off. They call Sophie, who confirms that Nate is meeting with Brandon. Meanwhile, Brandon and his men are beating up Nate and asking him why he's there. They figure he's an undercover man, but recognize him as Jimmy Ford's kid. Nate points out that he wouldn't have met them if he was undercover, and tells Brandon what he knows about their laundering operation. Brandon orders his men to kill Nate, but Sophie arrives and explains the rest of the operation. She claims to be with a London mob, and they hired Nate to find them money-laundering operations in the States. Sophie offers Brandon a working arrangement and offers $250,000 as a good-faith payment. Brandon says he'll have to talk to some people, and Sophie suggests he keep the $250,000 for himself.

At the bank, Eliot triggers the explosive charges as Leary comes out, simulating gunshots. Leary ducks for cover and calls Hardison's number.

At the hospital, Zoe and Nate watch over the comatose Matt. Hhe talks about the Catholic medal she wears and how her father got it for her after her mother died. Zoe explains that the authorities claim that the accident was Matt's fault, and Nate explains that her father discovered something at the bank. The girl blames herself for telling her father to call the police, and wonders if bad people always get away with bad things and no one stops them.

Hardison provides the team with upgraded earbuds, and Nate tells Eliot to make sure that Leary gets to the state police to testify against the mob. Parker has a suitcase of money for Brandon for the frame-up. Nate calls Brandon, who is waiting to meet with him at the river, and tells him that Sophie wants to see the money and the banker. Meanwhile, Hardison calls Leary and says they can protect him if he testifies, but warns him not to meet with anyone he knows from the O'Hares. He finishes the call by telling Leary to meet with Bonnano and then hangs up. Brandon then calls Leary and tells him to meet at the warehouse.

Nate meets Brandon at the warehouse and drops off the $250,000. He contacts Eliot, who warns him that Leary is coming to the warehouse instead of going to Bonnano. He comes in and demands to know what Brandon is doing. Nate realizes that Brandon isn't the boss, and warns the others that they're going to have to make it up as they go. Meanwhile Brandon suspects that the thing is a setup, and Leary recognizes Nate from the hospital. Leary tells Brandon to kill Nate, but Nate offers him the $250,000. When Nate admits that they thought Brandon was the boss, Leary explains that he has been stealing billions from the bank and collecting from the government. Brandon's men capture Eliot and bring him in, and Leary recognizes him as well. Nate has no choice but to plant a badge on him and claim he's a state policeman. Leary orders Brandon to kill Eliot. Brandon confesses that he screwed up Matt's brakes, and tells Leary to do it himself. Several shots ring out and Eliot falls over, dead.

Sophie holsters her gun and tells Nate to check Eliot for a wire. Nate produces a cell phone and Leary confirms there's nothing on speed dial. Sophie suggests that he hit the redial and it rings Brandon's number. They're unaware that Nate planted his own cell phone on Eliot, and it's showing the call Nate made to him earlier. Leary figures that Brandon is on it, and Brandon runs for it. Leary sends the mobsters after him, and Hardison and Parker pull up to rescue him. Once they're away, Hardison and Parker demands answers and tell him that he has 30 seconds to cut a deal before SWAT teams move in. He agrees to give them Leary and then Parker tasers him unconscious. They've recorded Brandon's confession.

In the warehouse, Leary assures Nate and Sophie that he's covered his tracks, but Matt could incriminate him. He takes the $250,000 and goes to the hospital to shoot Matt, but first tells Nate to clean up Eliot's corpse. Once he's gone, Eliot gets up and explains that he used Hardison's detonator and some ketchup.

At the hospital, Leary goes into Matt's room and draws his gun. However, he finds Bonnano waiting for him and has no explanation for the $250,000 in the briefcase. Bonnano informs him that Brandon has testified against him and notes that someone cleaned out seven safe deposit boxes at the bank for getaway money. They're unaware that Parker and Hardison cleaned out the boxes earlier using the fake key. Finally, it turns out that Leary has Matt's stolen briefcase: the team used it for the $250,000 they gave him. Bonnano doesn't believe Leary's claim that someone set him up.

Later at the bar, Nate gives Matt and Zoe a percentage of the back taxes that he uncovered. Matt thanks the team and Zoe gives Nate a hug and her medal. Sophie asks if that was his last job, and Nate suggests that they can do a few more cons until he finds a regular job. He invites Sophie to dinner, but she says she's meeting someone. He invites the person along, but Sophie says it's her boyfriend. She assures Nate that he'll meet him some day, and Nate tells her to go and have a nice time. Once she's gone, he goes to the bar and buys a drink. He contemplates it for a moment, and then puts it down and walks away.

Upstairs, Nate discovers that Parker and Hardison are setting up new monitor equipment and the painting from their old office. It turns out that Hardison bought the building and is Nate's new landlord. Eliot chainsaws his way through the adjoining wall to make room.
