Dalton Rand is meeting with a pregnant woman, Jodie, and giving her a psychic reading. He divines the name of her dog and then she asks if her dead husband Mike has sent any messages. Rand says that he's lost the connection and invites her to come back next week. He then meets with his assistant Wilson Perry and thanks him for finding the info, and they figure they can take Jodie for more money and goes over her credit rating
Nate meets with Jodie's brother, Ryan, who is worried that Jodie isn't dealing with her husband's death and is acting as if she's brainwashed. He warns that Rand has taken all of Mike's life insurance payout and Jodie will be mortgaging her house to continue paying him. Nate promises to help.
Nate and Parker go to the local cable station where Rand runs his show. In the van, Alec runs a check on Rand's records and reports that a network executive will be there to see if Rand is ready for a network show. Eliot is in the studio, and Nate and Parker enter. Parker admits that psychics freak her out. Rand comes on and starts probing the audience, tossing out names and making connections. Meanwhile, Eliot enters the production booth and plants a bug before Rand's assistant ushers him out. Alec then taps into the signal while Tara notices there's a smell in the van.
Nate starts disrupting Rand's readings, but Rand focuses on Parker and gets a reading about her brother, who died in a car accident when they were young. Rand is 100% seemingly accurate and assures Parker that her brother doesn't blame him. She breaks into tears and storms out of the studio. As Nate goes after her, Alec and Tara admit that he's good.
The team goes back to the apartment and tries to reassure Parker. She insists that no one could know about her brother and Rand is really psychic. Nate plays back the video and the team shows how her body language gave Rand everything he needed to tell her what happened. Rand managed to read the other audience members by researching them in advance. He has cameras outside the studio and uses plants to get people to talk about their pasts, and rights everything down. Rand's assistant then sends Rand the information using an ear bud. Parker vows to kill him and Eliot is glad to help, but Nate says it would be better to make Rand believe he's a real psychic, and then destroy him publicly. To do it, they'll need to steal the future.
Rand meets with the network rep, who notes that psychic show ratings are leveling off. He offers to take things to the next step. Rand then tells Wilson to get more information, but Wilson warns that it's increasingly risky. The fake psychic insists that confidence is the key and then asks what is on his schedule. Wilson explains that they've had some cancellations, and they're all for the same reason.
Rand goes to where Tara has set up as a psychic at a coffee shop, and Nate is pretending to be a satisfied customer. After Nate leaves, Rand approaches Tara and asks why she's stealing his clients. Tara feigns ignorance of any theft, and explains that she had a brain tumor removed and she gained a psychic gift. She has him feel her scar and Rand asks her for information about how her father died. Alec starts digging up information and feeding it to Tara, who tells him that his father is actually alive. Nate has the table rigged to give Rand a mild electrical shock. Tara continues to insist that the spirits talk to her, and offers to tell him his future. She takes his hand and says he has a different name, Jose, he didn't pay hic tickets, he shouldn't ask an officer for help, he should celebrate, he won't have enough money, and look both ways. Rand thinks it's an act and tells her to stay off his turf before leaving.
As Rand goes about his day, the events that Tara predicted come true. He gets a coffee cup marked Jose and his car is towed away because he didn't pay his tickets. An officer comes to see him. Later, he eats at a Chinese restaurant where his fortune cookie says to celebrate. He discovers his wallet is gone, and as he walks outside, he narrowly avoids being hit by a car.
The next day, Tara finds Rand waiting for her at the coffee shop. He tells her what happened and asks her to come work with her. Tara refuses, saying that she's a charlatan. However, Rand says that she needs him because she's in debt and will pay her hospital bills. Of course, Alec has set up false credit records for Tara. Rand explains that she only needs to work for him long enough to pay off her bills, and then asks how she did it. Of course, Tara doesn't tell him how the team set up all of the events. All she says is that she had a lot of help and glances up at the spirits.
Rand takes Tara to the studio and tells Wilson that she'll be working the booth from now on. Tara tries to back out but Rand insists that they're going to do something great and sits her down at the console. He then explains how to talk to him over the ear bud and tell her what she senses about the audience members. At the apartment, Alec monitors the audience transmissions while Parker starts pickpocketing wallets from audience members and sending the information to Alec. He checks the information and feeds it to Tara, who passes the information onto Rand. Eliot checks the cars out in the parking lot and gathers more information on the audience members. Tara's information is 100% accurate. Rand takes a break and admits to Wilson that Tara is great. One woman in her 40s has hired a detective, and Rand tells her that her husband was hiding something.
As they leave, a black van pulls up and men abduct Rand. Eliot steps in and protects Tara, but the men manage to drive away. The team regroups and figures that the woman's husband, Nicholas Kusan, wants something hidden after all, and he believes that Rand is a real psychic. Now they have to take down Kusan.
Alec tracks the van via traffic cameras, while Tara reviews Kusan's financial records. They reveal the address where Kusan is running his operation. Eliot and Tara go there and Eliot waits outside while she goes inside to confront Kusan. He and his men have Rand prisoner, and she claims that the spirits sent her there. Kusan invites her in and then explains that he was involved in a "business venture" with an associate, Chris Brancato. Kusan ended up in prison for robbing a bank and his associate passed away without revealing the location of the stolen funds. He wants Rand to find the stolen money.
Nate comes up with a plan to find Kusan's money. Rand tries to stall without success, and the team feeds Tara information on what they've set up. She tells them to find Brancato's car, and it will lead them to the money. They drive to where the team has planted the car and Tara guides Rand toward the vehicle. Inside the car they find a (fake) registration certificate confirming it belonged to Brancato. There's also a storage unit key and Tara tells them where it leads to. Nate has already paid off the owner and borrowed his coveralls.
When they get there, Alec warns that he isn't ready and Tara tries to stall. Kusan impatiently starts to open the unit, and Nate comes over to interrupt. The criminal draws a gun and demands to see his records, and Nate tries to stall. Kusan claims he's a cop and takes Nate to check the records. Meanwhile, Parker, Eliot, and Alec bring in boxes into a storage unit. Once they're ready, they tell Nate and he directs Kusan to the unit. Kusan's men search the boxes but don't find anything. Kusan threatens to kill Rand, who finally explains that he's a fake and tells him how he does it all.
Tara slams the door shut and locks them in. Kusan demands to know how he does it. The team then blows out the back of the unit… which is right next to Rand's studio. The audience is there and has seen the transmission of Rand's confession. The police arrive to arrest Kusan and Rand. As he's taken out, Rand sees the team watching him in satisfaction. Nate figures they'll both be going away for a long time. Tara wonders if the believers in the audience will fall for the next psychic, and Nate admits that they might.
Later, Nate meets with Jodi and Ryan. She admits that she missed Mike so much she made herself believed, and Nate assures her that her child will remind her of Mike, and she'll know that her dead husband is with her. As they leave, Tara is impressed with what Nate said. Parker gives Ryan the money that Rand took from Jodi. Ryan hugs a surprised Parker in gratitude. Once he leaves, Eliot notes that Rand was broke, and they wonder where Parker and Alec got the money. They refuse to tell him they stole it.
