At an underpass, two FBI agents meet with Lt. Patrick Bonnano, who is investigating a local criminal but admits he can't go to his own people because he suspects they're crooked. The FBI agents pull out guns and shoot at Bonnano, who gets into his van and out the back to return fire. The killers bring him down and drive away.
Bonnano is taken to the hospital. Nate arrives and finds Bonnano's wife Wendy and their son nearby. He introduces himself and she recognizes him from what her husband has said. She explains that her husband had the day off and didn't tell her anything about what he was investigating. He sees Bonnano's son and remembers running into a hospital and seeing a boy die.
At McRory's, Nate is drinking and calls Sophie. He leaves a message saying that she's wasting time trying to find herself. Tara arrives to tell him that everyone is upstairs and then finishes his drink for him.
At the team meeting, Nate explains to Tara that Bonnano is the cop they tip off. When Eliot warns that the people that shot Bonnano were using military-grade weapons, Nate snaps and says that they have to settle the score no matter what. The team looks at him in shock. After a moment, Alec brings up Bonnano's open cases. Nate notices one minor case on public corruption and figures that's the case that got Bonnano hurt. He has Alec bring up photos of the crime scene and explains that Bonnano was working the case off the books, which means he knew his attackers and didn't figure there's be any trouble. When Alec brings up the files, he realizes that it involves Brad Culpepper the III, Mayor of Belbridge, Massachusetts, who is running for re-election.
Tara and Nate go to a Culpepper rally where he talks of his triumphs and his career as a pitcher. Nate explains that they'll treat Culpepper like any other target. First they'll get intel on Culpepper. Eliot and Alec don fake uniforms and go to Bonnano's house, while Parker goes roof diving to get to his office.
As Culpepper meets with his silent partner, Kadjic, Nate and Tara introduce themselves as a real estate developer and a PR flack, donating the maximum to Culpepper's campaign. Impressed, Culpepper goes to talk to them.
Parker breaks into Culpepper's office and starts downloading his files. Meanwhile, Alec and Eliot impersonate crime lab techs and go to Bonnano's house. They bluff their way past the young cop who is housesitting, insist it's an active crime scene, and then order him in. Alec has him search the carpet for fibers.
A secretary comes in on Parker and Tara tells her to act the part. With some coaching from Tara via ear bud, Parker claims that she's pregnant with Culpepper's child. The secretary keeps Parker inside so no one will see her. Tara then returns to Culpepper, who is talking about how he was a professional ballplayer for half a season. He then asks what they want and he warns that he crushes anyone that gets in his away.
Eliot searches Bonnano's office and finds his hidden case files on Culpepper. They reveal that he was investigating Kirsch Industries, a company buying up property on the waterfront. They call Parker, who finds a file confirming that it's a front company for Culpepper out of the Caiman Islands. They figure he plans to cash in on the city's purchase of the property. When Parker mentions Culpepper's baseball memorabilia, Nate gets an idea and abruptly tells Culpepper they're not going to do business with him. As he leaves, Tara wonders what's up and Nate explains he has a bigger scam in mind.
At PGE Stadium in nearby Palmerston, the team gets back together and Tara thinks that something doesn't feel right. She doesn't believe that Culpepper is the type to order a hit. Eliot is looking at a page from Bonnano's book that refers to
The Maltese Falcon and wonders what is going on. Nate arrives and explains they're going to steal the stadium and the team.
Later, Culpepper is preparing for a meeting when his partner, Kadjic, calls in and tells him that Nate and Tara are at the waterfront, taking pictures. Culpepper tells his assistant to find out what they're doing. Meanwhile, Nate is busy taking photos and they figure Culpepper knows that they are there. Nate explains that they plan to buy the property to build a baseball stadium, and Culpepper will bribe them to get in on it. He'll have to take the money from his re-election fund, and they'll catch him for bribery. Then whoever shot Bonnano will roll over and testify against Culpepper.
At the stadium, Eliot introduces himself to the Beavers' coach as the new catcher. When the coach hesitates, Eliot explains that the owner hired him to see how things go and report back. He convinces the coach that he's best off leaving Eliot in position. The coach has his assistant check Eliot's background. Alec has created a complete background for him, despite the fact that Eliot doesn't like baseball… until he discovers he gets to hit things.
Alec calls in to a radio sports show and spreads a rumor that the Beavers are leaving the city. Parker helps out and Alec discovers she speaks Spanish. The ticket sales go crazy and Nate and Tara wait outside City Hall. Culpepper approaches them and provides a distraction while his aide steals the Fedex tube with their plans. Culpepper goes over the plans and realizes that Nate is building a waterfront stadium. The mayor believes it's his legacy and then reads the newspaper about the team leaving Palmerston, and figures they can move them to Belbridge.
The team's fans, lead by Parker and Alec, are protesting to keep the Beavers in town. Nate and Tara meet with the owner, Bud, who has no idea where the rumor started. Meanwhile, the team asks Eliot if they're moving. Eliot tells them that they're moving and they take the field. Culpepper finds Nate and Tara with Bud and figure the stadium deal is ready. Culpepper talks to Nate and asks him to build the stadium on the waterfront. He makes him an offer and leaves. Nate calls in Eliot, who wants to stay and finish out the game. Nate figures they've lost him through the playoffs.
Back at McRory's, Alec explains that he'll track the electronic payment out of his campaign funds and use it as evidence to put Culpepper away. Eliot comes in and wonders why they left. Culpepper calls Nate and tells him that they have to adjust their agreement: he's going to pay cash on his partner's insistence and make the exchange in an hour. The partner wants to meet Nate in person. Nate has no choice but to agree, while Kadjic tells Culpepper that it's for the best and the mayor will have to keep the heat off them a little longer. Meanwhile, Nate figures that Alec can track the cash, but Alec warns that he can't and the others are worried that Culpepper's partners could be dangerous. Nate refuses to back down and insists that they can bring Culpepper down and clean up the city.
On the docks where the meet is going down, Alec and Eliot impersonate Homeland Security and tell them to clear out for five minutes while they check out the security cameras installed with $20 in government anti-terrorism funds. Unfortunately, one of the men recognizes Eliot from the game and asks for his autograph. Eliot is happy to oblige. They start to tap the video feeds, but Alec realizes that something is wrong.
Nate and Tara go into the warehouse and meet with Culpepper, who has the money. Parker checks the perimeter beneath the dock and finds men with guns, moving crates of soybean. As Parker opens one of the crates, Culpepper tells Nate and Tara that his partners will be there in a few minutes. Meanwhile, Alec realizes that the security cameras financed with $20 million aren't all they are cracked up to be. And Parker discovers that the crates hold guns, financed with the $20 million.
Inside the warehouse, Culpepper starts to panic. When he gets close to Nate and Tara, Alec picks up feedback on their radio system. Nate realizes that Culpepper is wearing a wire as the FBI arrives. Alec, Eliot, and Parker regroup and pinpoint the cell phone belonging to Amy Nevins, the head of the FBI team. Alec calls her and says that they're holding hostages and they'll kill them if they come in. Nevins holds her team back and calls in reinforcements.
Inside, Tara realizes that Culpepper is a FBI informant. When they mention Bonnano, Culpepper blurts out that he knew about the hit on the police officer. The mayor admits that he knew about the investigation, and he secretly told his partners. Nate goes berserk with a wrench and Tara tells him to kill Culpepper so they can get out. Nate angrily throws the wrench way and comes up with a plan. He needs the others to create a distraction. Parker and Eliot look at Alec's van, Lucille, and he tells them not to do it. They ignore him.
Nate calls Nevins and tells her that he'll release one hostage as a sign of good faith.
Alec says a sorrowful goodbye to Lucille as Parker and Eliot finish rigging up the grenades from the soybean crates.
Tara and Nate tie up Culpepper and send him out. Meanwhile, Alec guides the van in using a remote control. It slams into the warehouse and explodes. However, Nevins soon realizes that Nate was released as a hostage on one side of the building… and Tara on another. Parker and Eliot, disguised as FBI agents, picked them both up and escaped in Nevins' car. They go to pick up Alec, who is angry that they blew up Lucille just because Nate ignored them and screwed up. He reluctantly gets in the car and they drive away.
Nevins demands to know why she should break Culpepper's deal since they have no idea who Nate and Tara are or what they want. Sterling arrives, introduces himself as an Interpol agent, and says he has a few ideas.
