Nate arrives to find his teammates arguing about the Dagger of Aqu'abi, a rare artifact that is on display at the Boston Museum after it recently turned up after being stolen from the same gallery five years ago. Everyone insists that they stole it, and they realized it when the broadcast came on. They decide to tell Nate what happened and let him decide who should get the credit. Sophie starts.
"Grifter"
Sophie sets up two identities, as a duchess and a restoration expert. She donated several pieces of art to get herself invited. Edgar Gladstone, the financier who owns the dagger, greets her. Coswell, the head of museum security, shows up and Gladstone talks to him privately. He explains to Sophie that he's had three pieces of art stolen in the last few months. Sophie then taints a glass of champagne with shrimp extract and sends it to Art Minister Robert Bioko of Zimbabwe. He has an allergic reaction to shrimp, as Sophie well knows. As she goes over to talk to Bioko, Dr. Wes Abernathy bumps into her. They flirt and he explains that he's a surgeon who fundraises for the museum. As they talk, the power fluctuates briefly. Bioko starts choking and Sophie steals Gladstone's security card. She then goes downstairs while Abernathy cuts open his throat and vows not to let him die.
Sophie goes to a closet, changes her clothing, and plans to use Gladstone's key card to get to the shipping and storage area. She then goes to the restoration room and assumes her fake identity as one of the experts. They will be processing all the items for shipping once the exhibit closes. Coswell comes in and notes she doesn't work nights. He explains that they have to process the artifacts right now because the exhibit is closing due to a medical emergency. Coswell then notices that Sophie looks like the duchess, and asks how long she's been working there. He then leaves and Sophie attaches her own shipping labels to a particular crate. As she leaves, Coswell returns, carrying a shotgun, and demands to know where Sophie is.
The Present
Sophie explains that she used the shipping labels to send the Dagger to her safe house in London. However, she's forced to admit that when she opened the crate, there was nothing there. Eliot smirks and admits that he stole the Dagger, and was at the museum posing as Dr. Abernathy.
"Hitter"
Two men come after Eliot and try to kill him. He disposes of them and gets a call from their boss, Gutman. Gutman tells Eliot that since he failed at a recent extraction, he has to make up his debt by stealing the Dagger. If Eliot refuses, Gutman will keep sending men until one gets through.
At the museum, Eliot gets into Dr. Abernathy's car and forces him to give up his clothing and his ID. Once inside, he bumps into Sophie and the power surges. When Bioko has his allergic reaction, Sophie volunteers Eliot to operate on Bioko. She runs off, and Bioko produces pills to deal with his reaction. Eliot takes Bioko to a first-aid station, while Gladstone realizes his key card is missing and tells Coswell. Eliot leaves Bioko in the first-aid station and goes downstairs, and overhears Coswell threatening Sophie. Eliot then takes out a security guard and shoves him into a closet. Coswell comes down with a case as Eliot poses as a security guard. The security chief demands to know where Sophie is, and Eliot has no idea what he's talking about. Eliot then runs to the shipping area, poses as a driver, and leaves with the case. However, he discovers that the only thing inside is a coffee mug.
The Present
Sophie isn't happy that Eliot stole the dagger from her, and Hardison can't resist pointing out that Eliot didn't get the dagger. He explains that Gutman got arrested a few weeks later so the criminal never made good on his threat. Hardison chuckles and tells them that he stole the Dagger. Nate points out that art theft isn't his kind of crime, and Hardison explains that the challenge was breaking the museum's new security system. He took the Dagger to prove he hacked the system.
"Hacker"
Hardison hacks the museum's e-mail and grabs the invite of a random dignitary, Bioko. Once he's inside, he hacks the firewall so he can set up his physical infiltration. After entertaining all of the woman, Hardison spots Sophie and Eliot flirting. The power surges because of Hardison resetting the system after putting his backdoor in place. Now he goes to access the mainframe by faking a choking attack. Sophie claims that he's having an allergic reaction to shrimp and Hardison plays along. However, when Eliot prepares to cut open his throat, Hardison claims that his tin of breath mints contains medication. Eliot takes him to the first aid station and wonders why he smells peppermint, and then goes to sharpen his knife and walk around the halls in the dark. Once Eliot goes, Hardison accesses the mainframe from the room's computer and sends the Dagger to the museum's vault.
As Hardison goes to the vault, he runs into Coswell, who mistakes him for another security guard. When the guard Eliot knocked out gets out of the closet, Hardison grabs Coswell, shoves him in, and locks them both in, and then gets the Dagger from the vault.
The Present
Hardison says he beat Sophie and Eliot and nothing else matters. Nate picks up on that and Hardison has to admit that when he opened the vault, the Dagger was gone. They wonder who did take the dagger, and Nate suggests that Parker did it. Parker smiles and explains.
"Thief"
Parker goes in disguised as a waitress and hides her equipment beneath the refreshment table, next to the ventilation shaft. She plans to wait for a distraction, sneak downstairs, and grab the Dagger when it's exposed. She avoids Hardison, who is stealing free appetizers, and has no idea what Sophie is saying with her assumed accent. Parker then runs into Coswell, who wonders why she doesn't have drinks on her tray or a name tag on her lapel. Parker slips away as the power flickers, and she realizes what happened. Hardison collapses, Sophie says he's allergic to shrimp, and Parker gives a big knife to Eliot to operate. Once everyone is suitably distracted, Parker climbs down the shaft to a storage room, but discovers that the door is locked. She climbs back up and overhears Coswell looking for Sophie. She then enters the storage chamber, puts a coffee mug in the dagger case, and watches as the guard puts the Dagger into the vault. Once everyone leaves, Parker opens the vault, gets the Dagger, and reenters the ventilation ducts. As she heads for the roof, she finds Coswell waiting for her. Parker punches him and drops. She catches herself but the Dagger falls off and drops down the shaft.
The Present
The team wonders why the Dagger was reported stolen, and Sophie figures that one of them was lying. Parker notices Nate looking smug and he points out that they're forgetting one thing: IYS Insurance covered the Dagger, and Nate worked for IYS. Now he knows exactly what happened the night of the theft.
"Mastermind"
Nate meets with a nervous, bumbling Coswell, and explains that IYS won't pay on the dagger if it's improperly protected. Sophie treats Hardison's drink and gives it to a grumpy Parker. Coswell admires Sophie from afar. Eliot takes the drink intended for Hardison and drinks it. A nervous Coswell asks Parker for a drink. Hardison collapses and Eliot is forced to try and operate. Sophie gets downstairs and Coswell approaches her, and tries to flirt with her, saying she looks better than the duchess. Once he leaves, Sophie goes ahead with her plan.
In the hallway, Coswell berates himself while Eliot tackles the guard. In the struggle, he locks the door, keeping Parker from getting out. Coswell comes back down with a case and looks for Sophie and insists he won't slip through her fingers on her last day. He comes out and finds Eliot, who has no idea where Sophie is or who she is.
Coswell comes up to talk to Nate, who suspects the food poisoning incident was faked. Coswell gives the case to Nate and says it's a shame to let them go to waste, and Nate discovers that they're flowers. Coswell then finds Eliot and shows him a photo of Sophie. In tears, he admits that he lost Sophie for good and hoped to fix things for good. The guard staggers out and Hardison locks Coswell and the guard back up. Coswell finds Parker's discarded climbing gear, goes up the shaft to get help, and runs into Parker. She drops the knife, and it falls down the shaft, through the vent, and into Nate's hand.
The Present
The team wonders why the Dagger was reported stolen.
The Past
Nate meets with Gladstone and Coswell. Gladstone blames Coswell for letting the thief go, but Nate has a better idea. He easily breaks the Dagger, revealing it's a fake. He then explains that he's there because Gladstone let the three other pieces be stolen. He realizes that Gladstone sold the real items on the black market, arranged bogus thefts of the replacement fakes he put in, and colleted on the insurance as well as making a profit on the original sale. Gladstone begs Nate not to go public about the thefts, and Nate agrees if Gladstone will roll over on his buyer. Coswell suggests that they claim the theft was successful so the buyer doesn't panic and make a run for it.
The Present
Sophie wonders if Nate got the dealer, and Nate explains that Gutman was the buyer. They took Gutman down, and he never got his revenge on Eliot. The others figure it was all for nothing, but Nate points out that it's good to be reminded that they work better as a team. He shows them the newscast, which reveals that the CEO of an oil company responsible for a major oil spill now owns the Dagger. He plans to show it as proof that he cares. The team immediately decides to go after it and take him down, and Nate says "what the hell" and goes with them.
