The Boys' Night Out Job - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Jack Hurley, one-time investor, is driving to McRory’s Tavern and almost hits international thief Craig Mattingly, who runs in front of Jack’s car. The thief runs away and Jack continues on his way.

At Nate’s apartment, Eliot and Alec are preparing to play poker with their friends. Sophie and Parker are going out, and Sophie tells Eliot to make sure that Nate doesn’t spend the night sulking.

Eliot’s mercenary friend Shelly and Lt. Bonnano arrive for the poker game. Nate ends up playing while Alec plays on both hands. In the middle of the game, Parker calls Alec to send him a photo of Craig and have him identify the thief. Once she hangs up, Alec worries about why Parker is interested in an attractive man in a tux. Nate goes downstairs to pour himself a drink and Jack comes in and hugs him. He notices that Nate is drinking and is disappointed, reminding him that they went into rehab together. Jack shows Nate his two-year AA pin as they go for a walk. As they head down the street, they’re unaware that two Irish thugs are following them. When Nate wonders how Jack found him, Jack tells him that Alec told him where Nate’s apartment was. He insists that he’s reformed and is now working with Sister Lupe to sell Virgin Mary statues for charity. When Nate realizes that Jack is in the U.S. making a delivery, and that his deliveries only occur at night, he figures that Jack is smuggling drugs. As he starts to explain, the two thugs start shooting at them.

Back at the poker game, Eliot hears the gunfire and realizes that something is going on. He gets Alec to go with him, telling Bonnano and Shelly that they’re going for pizza. Meanwhile, Nate and Jack take refuge in a church. When Eliot and Alec get to the scene of the first shots fired, they find shell casings and a hotel key card that Jack dropped. When Eliot tells Alec to call Nate, Alec warns that Nate left without his cell phone or his ear bud and that their friend is on their own. Alec identifies the card as coming from the Palaestra Hotel and they take off.

Inside the church, Jack insists that the two men must be after Nate because he’s cleaned up his life. When they arrive in the basement, they discover that an addiction support group is meeting there. Nate tries to back out but Jack grabs him and insists he stay there and talk about his alcoholism. When Jack insists, Nate tells him that Sister Lupe isn’t a real nun and that she’s running drugs inside of the Virgin Mary statues. Jack doesn’t believe it, insisting that he doesn’t screw up like that anymore, and Nate drops the matter for the moment. When he tries to borrow a phone from the group leader, Janice, she admits that she doesn’t have one and that the church office is locked up.

The two thugs, Liam and Connor, worry about their boss, Callaghan, and debate whether they can kill someone on holy ground. They decide to wait until Nate and Jack come out.

At the Palaestra, Eliot realizes that Alec is jealous about the guy Parker called him about. When they go to the hotel room that matches the key, Eliot notices that the lights are off when they shouldn’t be. He holds back and two Mexicans shoot through the door. When they come out, Eliot and Alec fight them briefly and the men run off. As Eliot goes after them, he bumps into two other men. The hitter takes them down and Alec checks their pockets. One of them has a flyer for a Venezuelan gala and figures that they’re dancers, and they wonder what the connection is between the Mexicans and the Venezuelans.

While Nate tries to borrow a cell phone without success, Jack talks to the crowd about his addictions and how he used to be a failure. Nate offers to talk next and starts talking about his ex-wife, and then asks anyone to loan him a friend so he can call her and make amends.

Alec and Eliot check Jack’s room and find his overnight bag, holding enough clothes for a three-day trip. All of the clothes are for a big guy and made in Mexico. They also find a valet ticket for Jack’s car. Meanwhile, Nate gets a cell phone and calls Alec, pretending that Alec is his ex-wife. He tells Alec and Eliot that he’s with Jack and they finally remember that they dealt with him before. Nate manages to convey the fact that there are drugs in Jack’s car and that there are Irish mobsters after him. While Alec and Eliot go to check out Jack’s car in the hotel’s parking garage, Nate gets a round of applause from the support group for his honesty.

In the parking garage, Eliot and Alec find the unconscious valet. Two of the Venezuelan crooks take Jack’s car and try to run the partners over, and Eliot blinds them with an umbrella, causing them to crash. However, by the time he gets to the car, the Mexican criminals have managed to escape.

Nate explains to Jack who he was really talking to and says that it must be safe to leave. However, Liam and Connor are still outside and head for the door as the meeting breaks up. As Nate and Jack head to the door, Sister Lupe shows up and draws a gun on them. She tells Jack that Nate was leading him into an ambush, but starts to realize that he isn’t with Liam and Connor. Nate gets close enough to coldcock her and take her gun. He then calls Alec and tells him that the Irish thugs are with the Callaghan mob. Callaghan runs the drug business in Boston and wants to kill Jack to send a message to the Mexican drug cartel. The Mexicans want to get their drugs back and kill Jack, their unwitting courier, to cover their tracks. Nate wants to bargain with Callaghan and needs the missing drugs, and suggests that Alec call Bonnano.

At Nate’s apartment, Shelly is busy entertaining Bonnano by demonstrating choke holds on him. Alec calls and asks Bonnano for information on Mexican drug cartel safe houses in Boston, and the lieutenant sends him an address.

Nate checks Lupe’s gun and realizes that it’s a toy. Jack accuses her of using him as a patsy, but Lupe explains that she’s part of a group that liberates anti-cancer drugs from factories in South American and smuggles them to the U.S. for people who can’t afford them normally. The Mexican cartel found out about her shipment route and planted their drugs in Jack’s car to get them into the States.

Outside, Callaghan pulls up and tells Liam and Connor to break the deadlock by hauling Nate and Jack out of the church and then killing them.

Eliot and Alec arrive at the bar that the Mexicans are using. Alec insists on going in with Eliot, who tells him that his problem is that he’s slow-playing his relationship with Parker. When he suggests that Alec be more assertive, Alec insists on going in and getting the drugs himself. He knocks out the man at the door, stalks into the bar, and tells the cartel men that he’s a dirty cop.

When Connor and Liam enter the church, there’s no sign of Lupe and Jack. Nate is there, dressed as a priest, and greets them.

While Eliot quietly takes out the cartel men behind Alec’s back, Alec tries to bluff the head man, Aaron Cortez, and demands a payoff in return for permission to operate in Boston.

Nate has Liam and Connor help him move the flowers on the altar while Jack and Lupe try to sneak out of the church. He finally tells them that Jack is hiding in the confessional and stages a phony conversation with Jack.

Parker calls Alec for help finding a thumb drive in the Venezuelan Consulate. She hangs up once she has what she needs and Alec asks for the drugs from Cortez as a payment for permission to operate in town. Cortez agrees but demands that Alec gives him Jack, and Alec agrees. Eliot and Alec leave with the drugs but Alec drops one of the statues and they realize that there’s no drugs inside of it.

Nate tries to keep Liam and Connor occupied, but Connor finds Lupe’s discarded habit. Jack knocks over a candle holder and the thugs go after him and Lupe. Jack gets outside first but Liam shoots him in the leg. Lupe gets the drop on Liam and Nate gets Jack away, warning there’s nothing they can do for Lupe. Connor arrives and captures her and Nate is forced to drive away with Jack. He pulls over a few blocks away, ditches the stolen car, and calls Alec. Alec tells him that they don’t have the drugs and Nate tells him to go to a pharmacy to get what he needs. A little while later, Nate and Jack meet Eliot and Alec at a bar. Eliot stitches up Jack’s wound while Alec uses an over-the-counter drug-testing kit to confirm that the drugs the cartel had were the anti-cancer drugs. Nate realizes that the drugs are hidden in Jack’s car and that Cortez figures it as well, and they head back to the parking garage.

At the parking garage, the guys discover that Jack’s car is gone. Alec checks and confirms that it was towed to the city impound lot. Nate sends Alec and Eliot to get it while he calls Callaghan and offers him the drugs they don’t have. Callaghan agrees, offering Lupe in trade, but insists on having Jack so he can kill him. Jack tells Nate that he wants to make the trade if it will save Lupe, and Nate reluctantly sets up a meeting with Callaghan in the parking garage. Once he hangs up, Nate tells Jack that he’ll do what he can to save him, but Jack says that he just wants to prove he deserves the second chance that Nate and the others got for him. Nate agrees and calls Cortez, telling him to meet him at the parking garage so they can hand off the drugs to him.

Alec and Eliot go to the impound lot and Eliot flirts with Clark, the attractive officer on duty. However, she tells them that they’ll have to come back in the morning, because they have several gold sedans that match Jack’s. Alec draws Eliot off to the side and insists that he’ll get the sedan out of the lot. Eliot warns against it but Alec insists on playing rock-scissors-paper despite the fact that he has a tell. However, Eliot throws the game and Alec sneaks over the fence while Eliot goes back to flirt with Clark. However, she says that the guard dogs do most of the patrolling and Eliot watches on the monitor screen behind Clark as the dogs chase Alec. Nate calls and Alec tells him that everything is going fine, and Nate asks him to get another similar-looking gold sedan.

Later, Alec and Eliot return with two gold sedans. As Eliot puts the duplicate car into position elsewhere in the garage, Alec warns Nate that it will be a tricky job to pull off. Nate say that it always is and has Alec take the Mexican plates off of Jack’s car.

Liam and Connor arrive with Callaghan, who sends them in with Lupe to make the exchange. The two thugs meet with Nate and Jack, and they agree to meet halfway and make the exchange. However, Jack panics and refuses to turn himself over to them to be killed. He gets in his car and drives by them, while Nate grabs Lupe. Liam and Connor grab the drugs, call Callaghan to warn him that Jack is heading his way, and head after Jack themselves. Callaghan fires a shot into the approaching gold sedan and orders it to stop. However, Cortez and his men get out of the gold sedan and wonder who Callaghan is. They figure that they’re being double-crossed, even though Callaghan has no idea who they are. Bonnano and his men arrive and arrest both mobs. Connor and Liam try to run out, but Shelly is there to take them down. Bonnano finds the drugs in the trunk of Cortez’s car and tells Callaghan that he’s under arrest for buying drugs, while Cortez is under arrest for selling them.

Earlier, Eliot, Alec, and Jack met with Cortez and his men, gave Cortez the drugs and the duplicate car, and said that they’d take care of Jack. Cortez drove off and Jack ran back to be with Nate with Liam and Connor arrived. When Jack drove off in the sedan, he parked and Eliot blocked him off with a SUV. Liam and Connor drove by and spotted Cortez in the duplicate car just as the Mexicans pulled out.

Nate and the others leave in Jack’s car, and Bonnano spots them and tips Nate a wink. They go back to the bar and Lupe and Eliot hit it off. Meanwhile, Nate tells Jack that he’s not the man he used to be, and Jack says that Nate is his friend no matter what Nate thinks of him. Jack finally figures out that Lupe isn’t a nun and leaves, but bumps into Parker’s friend Peggy. They hit it off due to their shared interest in cats and tacos, and Jack walks her to her car.

Nate asks Alec why he gave Jack the information to find him, and Alec explains that he wanted Nate to see someone that they had helped rather than just the crooks that they took down. Nate thanks him and Alec goes to see Parker as she comes back while Eliot and Lupe take off together.
