Beat The Devil - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Lie to Me continues on with the season and the scene opens with a car pulling up to a private property. The stranger gets out of his car and grabs a shovel from the trunk of the car. He walks and starts digging. A girl moves around in the back seat and is struggling to get away. She is handcuffed. The stranger is digging a grave for her but as he is digging, the girl wriggles free and escapes down the road. Lightman, Foster, and Helen Dezekis are meeting and Lightman and Foster are going to give a lecture. In the lecture, showing a picture of Nixon as an example and how he looks down and that he is lying, there is a heckler who says that just by looking down, it doesn’t mean that they are lying. His name is Martin Walker and Lightman wants him as a volunteer for his test. Martin tells that there has to be stakes if they could tell if the lie is true or not. Lightman bets him $100 that he can read him like a book. He fails to read him when Martin describes a beautiful young woman. Lightman says that he will double the stakes and tries again. When Martin tells it is a man tied up, he fails as well. Lightman asks Helen if she put Martin up to it, but Lightman picks up more. He feels that Mark is a psychopath and possibly a killer.

Lightman tells Dean Warren that Martin shows repulsive behaviors when arousal was permitted in the beautiful girl and arousal when repulsive behaviors are permitted with the picture of the man tied up. Dean Warren disagrees and Helen tells that Lightman always goes to the extreme. Dean Warren asks Foster if she saw the same thing that Lightman saw. But she doesn’t see the same thing. Lightman wants to know if any missing persons cases are open. The Dean shows signs of fear and we find out that a two sophomore girls have gone missing. He tells that he will have the police question Martin quietly. Back at the Lightman Group Foster tells Lightman that he is mad that she did not back him up back at the university. Lightman wants to her to get Martin’s files in front of him and Foster tries to tell that they are confidential. Lightman doesn’t care. Meanwhile Torres and Loker are questioning a teacher who tells that he saw an unidentified flying object. Mr. Hickson claims that he is not crazy. The UFO claim is a pattern Torres says and she doesn’t want to believe him. Loker thinks that he railroaded. Mr. Hickson listens into their converstaion and tells that he is telling the truth. He doesn’t want to loose his job as a science teacher.

Lightman is staking out Martin with Reynolds and Lightman sees Martin take a girl to his car. Martin sees that Lightman is watching and walks over. He says that the girl is “safe enough” and Lightman picks up on something else with him. Back at the Lightman Group, Martin enters and Lightman is there. He knew that Martin was going to be there because predators always “stake out their territory”. Martin tells that he is “harmless” and that is a lie. Lightman is certain that he will mess up and he will wait. He tells Lightman that he is going to loose the game. Lightman is on university campus posting pictures of Martin and saying that he is dangerous. Helen comes out and asks Lightman what he is thinking. She feels that Lightman is still upset what happened with them 23 years ago. Foster tries to tell Helen that Lightman is just a little controlling. Helen tells Foster to keep her distance from Lightman romantically.

Back at the Lightman Group, Loker and Torres are interviewing the students of Mr. Hickson. Torres jokes about the “special brownies” that the teacher would give but one student, Andre, is not laughing. Loker calls him into question about it and he shows Loker the video that he taped on his phone about the UFO sighting. Torres tries to say that it was done on photoshop but when she questions Andre, she picks up that he is telling the truth. Loker wants to get someone they can read about it from the Air Force. Meanwhile Foster and Lightman meet with Martin’s mother in his own home and claim that he is considered for the “Lightman Scholarship”. He starts to question his mother about his childhood. Martin enters and tells that they are lying and that they want to destroy them. He shows her the poster that Lightman was putting around school. She wants them out of her house and Lightman picks up that the mother doesn’t think that Martin wouldn’t hurt a girl. In the car, Foster tells Lightman that he is seeing what he wants to see. She brings up that Helen and Lightman have unresolved issues and that he doesn’t like Foster. Lightman grabbed a home video from the house. Reynolds gives Lightman the background check on Martin. They find out that Martin had a sister that was two years older then him, but she drowned when she was seven and Martin witnessed the whole thing. Reynolds gets a call and there is a girl that was found in the woods in the hospital that had a mental breakdown and is not talking.

Torres is at a coffee shop and Martin spills Torres’s coffee. He offers to buy her a coffee. She walks out with Martin and he asks if she wants to go with him to a concert later. She agrees and when she turns around to give him her number Martin tells that he knows her “boss”. Torres wants to know what he wants. He wants to make a point that if Lightman was right then she would have already be dead. Meanwhile Loker and Mr. Hickson are on camera telling about the UFO sighting to the local news in hopes to draw the military out. Foster is meeting with Valerie the girl that was attacked. Torres goes in there to coax her to tell what happened to her. She claims that she died 3 times by Martin drowning her and then he saved her life giving her CPR and then doing it over and over again. Martin is in the interrogation room and he is getting grilled by Lightman and Reynolds. Helen and Foster are watching outside the room and Helen wants to know if Lightman coached Valerie and that she is exaggerating the story because she spent half her life on Anti-Depressants. Reynolds tells that they are going to search his car and Martin is playing the innocent one until Lightman brings up Helen and him being an item. Lightman tells that it won’t last and Martin breaks with a flash of anger. They got him.

Lightman meets Foster and Helen in his office and tells that he knew that Helen and Martin were an item. He takes Helen to Martin’s home and talks to his mother again. This time, Lightman tells that Martin is a killer and tells that he killed his sister. The mother struggles as tears roll down her cheeks. Helen tells the mother that she needs to know if he did or not. Meanwhile, Torres is looking at a gallery of con-men of the past and Mr. Hickson enters. They talk about how he knows what happened to her and that anyone could be fooled. Coronel Gormon from the military wants to privately meet. He tells Hickson that it was coded “shattered bone” meaning a B1 Bomber high jacked with a nuclear weapon. He tells that it was shot down and it is a tragedy and Torres picks up on Gormon’s lies. Loker takes Gorman aside and asks if they could chalk it up enough to save face from the government and to save Hickman’s career he agrees.

Helen tells that it is over with Martin and her. She likes his work but it is over. He grabs her violently and she gets a call from the Dean. After he leaves, Lightman comes out of the closet and now, the bait is set. Helen walks home in the dark and sees a van pull up she starts to think it is Martin. But Reynolds assures her that she is safe through wireless communication. She calls Lightman and Lightman is at the office. But he is not alone. Martin is there and he has a gun. The next scene shows Lightman lying down tied up with a towel on his face. Martin uncovers his face and asks if he is ready to die again. He is doing the same thing that he did to Valerie and dumps water on the towel on his face. He takes Lightman in the woods and makes him start digging his own grave. He tells that he has a GPS tracker on him. But Martin doesn’t believe him. Lightman tells that Martin should do the digging. He wants to know the connection between his fascinations with water and what happened with his sister. Martin tells that she watched his sister drown because he wanted her bike. Reynolds shows up with his crew and they arrest Martin. He claims that there are no bodies but Lightman recognizes that he looked at the trees. He also tells that he wants his $200 back from Martin too.

Locker is watching the video that Andre taped and tells that the Coronel racked it up as an F-88 but Loker doesn’t believe it. Torres compliments him on saving Mr. Hickman’s career. Lightman enters Foster’s office and says that they dug off four bodies and she tells that she is sorry that she did not see it right away. Foster brings up Helen and the fact that Lightman loved her. He doesn’t deny it but said it was over a long time ago. At the request to get a bite to eat, Foster denies his request. Looks like she is taking Helen’s advice.
