The scene opens with Reporter Julie Cannell talking and leaving a message for Lightman telling him that she wants to use him to tell if her source, Bo Hackman, that she is meeting is telling the truth. She enters her hotel room and Bo is there. He gives her an envelope and tells that he needs to leave. She asks him to wait and tells that she called Lightman and he stays. Meanwhile, Lightman gets home and finds shoes on the floor and a boy’s shirt. He calls for Emily who comes down quickly. He tells that he knows about a boy being there. Rick comes down and Lightman is not happy. He gets the message from Julie and tells that he has to go and tells Rick that he is going to get dropped off at home. Emily tells that she is going to go with them and tells that it is just sex. This makes for the drive uncomfortable for everyone. They arrive at the hotel and Lightman tells Emily to go with him. He enters the hotel room that has been kicked in. He finds that Julie is dead.

Ben and his boss Bernard Dillon arrive at the crime scene and Dillon tells that Julie was involved in a story about Darryl Anslinger, an ex-police officer who is now a city councilman up for the running for Mayor and is on the FBI’s watch list. They go to Anslinger’s office and Dillon tells Lightman that he is there only to observe his reactions. Lightman tells that Anslinger doesn’t know anything about Julie’s murder and Anslinger says that the story Julia was writing was “simply pure fiction”. Lightman picks up that Dillion is friends with Anslinger and gets told to drop it. In the hall, Lightman sees Bo in the hallway and sees him run off. At the Lightman Group later, Foster, Loker, Torres, and Lightman are talking about the newspaper Julie worked for and Bo arrives at the office. He introduces himself at the same time, two detectives from Baltimore arrive and Bo and Lightman run down the stairwell to get out of the building. Bo tells that Anslinger hired him to kill a man named Steven Cook, a billionaire, but he couldn’t do it. He tells that he has copies of the file contents and will get them to him. He runs out of the building and the two detectives come into the stairwell.
Back at the Lightman Group, Lightman asks who the detectives are working for and they don’t tell him. Torres told that Bo was there, but tells Lightman after the two detectives leave that they are lying about being on a “routine follow-up” with Lightman about being the last one with Julie. Lightman tells Torres to find Cook and Loker gets sent to Julie’s newspaper instead. Lightman goes into his office to find that Emily and Rick are there. He tells that Rick and him need to talk sometime and leaves. He walks up to Foster and asks for her help about Emily and the fact that she lost her virginity. Foster tells that she will talk with Emily and Lightman. He walks into his office again and tells that he is going to talk about the sex and Rick again tonight with Foster over dinner.
Lightman and Foster meet with Anslinger again and he tells that he has been stopping Cook’s plans for a housing project that he has been planning on and that if he wanted him dead, he would have made it happen. Lightman believes him. Lightman and Foster arrive at Lightman’s home for find that there are flashlights moving around. Lightman reaches for the pepper spray in Foster’s bag and sneaks up to the perpetrator. He sprays and the other perpetrator with a gun is there. The lights come on and it is the two detectives from Baltimore and the woman is screaming in pain from the spray. She dabs her eyes and Lightman demands to know why they are there. They tell that they thought the Bo was inside and that the door was “unlocked”. However, when Emily gets home, she denies this. Lightman tells that they need to get out and they find out that they are working for Anslinger. Foster and Lightman tells that they are going to have to talk to Emily another night.

Reynolds and Torres question the assistant of Cook that says that Cook is in hiding because of the attempt on his life. However, Torres picks up that he is lying and that he is in the building. At the same moment, Dillon tells that another case is going to have to take more precedence. Dillion leaves and Reynolds asks Lightman if the history he has with Dillion and the whole questioning on him was based on science. Lightman tells that he had a feeling and was right. Lightman gets a call and tells Reynolds that he is on his own. Lightman arrives at a station and sees Bo in the crowd. Suddenly he is shot in the back of the head by someone and Reynolds appears and is shot as well. Lightman checks for a vest and sees that Reynolds was wearing a wire. Dillon arrives on scene and tells that Reynolds agreed to the wire so that he could prove that Lightman’s issue with Dillon was strictly only based on science. Dillon threatens to suspend Lightman Group’s FBI contract that he has. Lightman tells that he is going to the hospital where Reynolds is staying at.
Cook arrives at the Lightman Group and Lightman tells Dillon that he is going to interview Cook about the attempt on his life. Cook comes in and tells that he didn’t know about the envelope and after a little bit he tells that he knew. Cook asks if they've searched Anslinger's office, house, and condo. At the mention of the Condo, Dillon gets scared and Lightman realizes it. Loker tells that Anslinger used the condo for his fornication with hookers. Call walks into the room where Dillon is and asks if he is getting something from the hookers and it is clear that he is. Now Lightman has leverage on Dillon to not end any contracts. Lightman and Foster go to the hospital to check on Reynolds who just got out of surgery. He is on a respirator. Foster asks about Lightman’s relationship with Julie and he replies that she wanted to be more than friends. They go back to the Lightman Group and meet with Anslinger. Loker comes in and tells that the FBI found something. Dillon is in the hall and shows that they recovered a paper shredder from the Condo. Loker also points out that Cook is the owner of Julie’s newspaper.
Cook arrives and Lightman decides to but Cook in the cube with Anslinger. Lightman tells that there is going to be a clean fight and tells Anslinger that they only found a paper shredder at the condo. Lightman tells that Anslinger is showing signs of relief and Lightman tells that Anslinger didn’t want them to find any sex habits found out. Lightman gets to the point and tells that Cook was the one that hired Bo to stage the attempt on his life. He tells that Cook also hired detectives and that the envelope was only bait so that Bo could kill her and frame Anslinger. That is when Cook had Bo killed. This all stems off from a DUI that Cook received when Anslinger was a police officer. Cook tells that Anslinger arrested his girlfriend and said that she was under prostitution charges, dated her and then dumped her. It was payback for that. Cook lunges at Anslinger and is put into a headlock. Dillon comes in and arrests Cook.

Anslinger walks out and sees all of Julie’s files scattered on the floor. Lightman tells him that they are going to get to know each other. Lightman gets home and finds Emily there. He tells that Rick is going to say anything to get what he wants from her. Emily comes clean that she and Rick never had sex and that she was just mad at Lightman. However, she tells him that she actually lost her virginity two boyfriends ago. Lightman asks if he can trust her anymore and she tells that he can because she is smart and he loves her. They hug and make up.
