The scene opens with a woman writing on the hand after seeing the death of another woman in the hospital. The woman is runs out and Emily, who is texting on her phone, doesn’t see her and hits her. The woman gets up and asks Emily if “he” told Emily look like an accident. Emily sees the that the woman has “Charlie” written on her hand. The woman claims she's only 24 years old, but she is a lot older. Emily asks to take her home. The woman tells that her name is Veronica. Emily calls Lightman and they drive her home. But, when they arrive there, it is not her home. Veronica tells Lightman that Charlie killed Rose, her sister. When he drapes his coat over her shoulders, she calls him "Burt" and kisses him.

They take Veronica to the Lightman Group. Emily sees Loker stumble in with his face bleeding. He tells that life happened to her. Torres sees him and attempts to tend to his wounds. Veronica takes over and starts to take care of him. Foster comes into Lightman’s office and tells that Veronica isn't suffering from schizophrenia or drugs, but suffers from early Alzheimer's. Lightman tells her to look up Burt and that address that she gave. Back inside with Loker, Veronica talks about some medical facts, and tells that she met Burt while she was a nurse and tells that he changed her life. However, when Emily asks what went wrong, Veronica returns to tending Loker about the same medical facts. Foster and Lightman talk in his office and she tells that Burton and Veronica Sloan used to live at the address she gave, but they moved away 10 years ago. Burt's been dead for three years. Rose, was murdered in 1968 and the only suspect that the police had was Veronica.

Lightman and Foster go to Veronica’s brother-in-law, Gus. Lightman gets into his face and he told that Horizon’s Care, the facility that Gus put her in, didn’t tell her that she was missing. He tells that Charlie is a figment of Veronica’s imagination. Lightman tells that Veronica is ill, not paranoid. Foster, Loker, Torres and Emily listen to a cassette tape of Veronica's 1968 police interrogation at the office. Torres hears survivor's guilt. Loker hears rehearsed dialogue, but Foster tells that she hears that she's hiding something else. Lightman takes Veronica to her room at the facility and Dr. Joshua Hamill comes in and welcomes Veronica back. She becomes lucid and recalls everything. Lightman speaks with Hamill and resident psychiatrist, Vincent Olsen. Lightman tells that they need to hold off on the medication for now and tells that he wants to help her. Olsen agrees to sign off on it. Lightman, Emily and Veronica watch home movies and Veronica tells that she was engaged to Charlie Eaton before Burt. Lightman goes to visit Charlie at his house and tells that Veronica is telling that he killed her sister Rose. He denies it and Lightman tells that it is funny how the same day that Rose dies, he signs up for the Vietnam War. Charlie tells him to leave.

At the Lightman Group, the team looks at old photos of Veronica, Rose, and Charlie. They try to determine why they are not close as they were and after getting ridiculed, Torres asks what Lightman sees. He tells that Rose is holding her stomach. Torres realizes that Rose was pregnant in the picture. Lightman revisits Charlie and he tells that he did get her pregnant and tells that Veronica was angry. He tells that he didn’t kill her. However, Lightman sees that he blames Veronica for the death of her sister. Foster meets up with Lightman and tells that she thinks that Veronica is using Alzheimer's to mask her guilt that she is feeling. Lightman tells that Veronica needs to be taken to her old address, where Lightman will "resurrect Burt", so to speak. When Veronica arrives at the home, she becomes jealous of Foster. She names four people Charlie murdered and tells that Rose didn't want to have Charlie's baby. However, Lightman tells that it was not true. Veronica then admits that she hired a woman to “terminate” the pregnancy and says that Rose died during the procedure. Lightman tells that Veronica is more contempt for herself than Charlie is. Foster tells that the other people she named were recent deaths that happened. She tells that Veronica is mixing up the past and present.

Later, Lightman enters Veronica’s room and plays music and lays his jacket on her as he exits the room, he sees 26-year- old Mark and he has been in a coma eight months. Frank comes up to him and who says that Veronica always lifted his now deceased daughter, Gretchen's, spirits. He tells that she wanted Veronica to have a hand-painted card that reads "from Rose." Foster arrives and reports twelve residents in the facility died within the last six months. Veronica identifies a photo of Gretchen as Rose. Lightman tells that Charlie is actually a member of the staff who is killing people in the mental home. They talks to Dr. Hamill again at the Lightman Group and tell that there is an “angel of death” in his hospital. He denies it and Lightman tells that he wants to interview everyone. As the interviews go, everyone hates their job besides a man named Frazier. He tells that he and Dr. Olsen are the only people who care about the residents.

Lightman visits Veronica’s room again and he hears an ambulance outside and goes out into the hall to find out that another patient died. Dr. Hamill tells that when it is their time, it is their time. Lightman doesn’t believe him. Lightman sees Veronica’s door close and he goes to investigate. He finds Dr. Olsen on Veronica’s bed and Lightman tells that he is “playing god” and tells that he killed Gretchen, the teenage girl. He tells that doctors play God all the time. Veronica wakes up and sees him putting on his white coat. She calls him Charlie and says that she is sorry that she killed Rose while trying to abort his baby. She tells that she doesn’t want him to kill her. He tell that he forgives her and tells that Lightman has to forgive now. Lightman goes home to find that Loker is in the kitchen. He tells that he got his wounds from “research”. Lightman tells that if he does his job correctly, it is going to hurt. He puts his feet up and Loker tries to as well, but Lightman tells him not to push it.

At the facility, Dr. Olsen is with Mark and gives him an injection that kills him. However, Lightman enters and tells that it was only saline solution that he gave the patient, who turns out to be Loker. Lightman tells that he had no right to do any of the killing and Dr. Olsen tries to say that he was only trying to prevent them feeling pain anymore. Lightman and Emily say goodbye to Veronica and show that they brought her piano. Lightman, Emily and Foster leave with Veronica playing. Later, Emily walks up to her car again texting away. She notices that a steering wheel lock on the car. Lightman tells that she has to give up one thing, her car or her phone. Emily tries to say that she misses her mom and tells that it was nice what Lightman did for Veronica. She calls her boyfriend, Liam and tells that she needs a ride. Lightman tells that he is still mad at her and she eventually gives up her keys.
