After spending 15 years in the foster care system in Portland, Oregon, Lux opts to become an emancipated minor. However, as she navigates the legal system, she finds her biological parents, local radio personality Cate Cassidy and Nate "Baze" Bazile, a couple who had a one-night stand in high school. Though Cate and Baze haven't seen each other in 15 years, it doesn't take them long to start again where they left off, quickly falling into the same same contentious relationship they had as teenagers. But when the judge rules that Lux isn't ready to be an emancipated minor and grants joint custody to Baze and Cate, they agree to try to make things work in order to give Lux the life she deserves.

Lux is faced with a dilemma when her boyfriend, Bug, and best friend, Natasha, both think that Cate and Baze won't be around permanently and that it would be best for Lux to return to her life in the foster care system. Meanwhile, the radio station pressures Cate to deny she has a daughter in order to save her job.

Meanwhile, when Cate learns about gang activity at Lux's school, she has Lux transferred to the school that she and Baze attended -- Westmonte.

Cate debates whether or not to tell Ryan the truth about Baze, but is worried about what consequences the truth may have. Meanwhile, Tasha tells Lux she may be moving three hours away, causing Lux to set out to find Tasha's birth mother who is living in town.

Jones asks Lux to be his date for the Winter Formal. Baze finds a condom in Lux’s room, and thinking it belongs to Jones, shows up at the dance to try and stop Lux and Jones from having sex. Cate agrees to chaperone the dance, but being at her old high school for Winter Formal brings back painful memories about the night Lux was conceived.

During a meeting with the social worker, Cate, Baze and Lux agree to put on a happy face to ensure that Lux isn't placed back in the foster care system. Meanwhile, in an attempt to show Lux that she supports her, Cate offers to find Bug a job at her radio station, but winds up disappointing Lux once again.

At the concert, Haley and Cate meet and discover that they have incredibly similar pasts. It turns out that both women were somewhat nerdy, overachieving teenagers who got pregnant in high school by athletes named Nate . And when a secret of Cate's gets outed, Cate turns to Haley for advice.
