  Cultural References
Gene: Little sod! Should bring back National Service.
Sam: What? Take him away, teach him how to kill people?
Gene: Didn't do me any harm. Teach him some manners.

National Service, the system of military conscription in the UK, ended on 31st December, 1960. With regards to this episode, that would've been over a decade ago.

Pete Bond: Your mate's got some balls.
Sam: If they were any bigger, he'd need a wheelbarrow.

Sam is referring to Buster Gonad, a comic character from Viz, who was struck in the testicles by a meteorite which emitted strange cosmic rays and enlarged his testicles to the point where Buster has to carry them around in a wheelbarrow.

Sam: And then we overreact and we have to put up perimeter fences and we treat the fans like animals, forty-fifty thousand people herded into pens. And then how long before something happens, 'ey? How long before something terrible happens? And we are dragging bodies out?

Sam is referring to the Hillsborough Disaster of 15th April, 1989. An FA Cup semi-final match between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool took place at the neutral venue of Hillsborough football ground in Sheffield. With time running out before kick-off, thousands of Liverpool fans were still waiting to get inside. Instead of delaying kick-off, the police made the decision to open a gate allowing the Liverpool fans to rush into an already packed stand. Due to violence, high fences had recently been erected at most clubs to keep rival fans apart and this resulted in many people getting crushed at the front of the stand. Police were totally unprepared for the scale of the disaster and 90+ people died that day.
