Walkabout - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The episode opens inside Locke's dream. It's right after the crash and he is laying on his back. He opens his eyes and sees the chaos before. People are running around and screaming and pieces of burning plane lay everywhere around him. He picks his head up and cautiously looks down towards his feet. He wiggles his big toe, everything works.

It is real time now, Locke awakens from his dream because of Vincent's barking. The dog wakes up the entire camp. He is barking at the fuselage. Jack and the others get closer and listen; they hear something inside the fuselage. But everything in there is dead. Jack thinks its Sawyer, but Sawyer is right behind him. Sawyer shines his flashlight into the fuselage. They see two shining eyes looking back at them.

Three squealing animals come racing out of the wreckage and run through the camp into the jungle. Locke says they are Wild Boars. They were eating the bodies, which had been baking in the sun for the last 4 days. Jack says they need to do something but they can't bury them because the boars will dig them up. Jack makes the only decision he can; the bodies must be burned.

The camp realizes they are out of food. A panic begins to spread throughout the camp so Locke devises a plan to solve the food problem. He says they will hunt the boars. What are they going to hunt with? Locke shows everyone the case of knives he checked into the luggage compartment.

FLASHBACK: Locke is sitting in his cubical at work. He gets a phone call from someone who calls him "Colonel". Is he in the military? Locke is sitting in the break room playing a war board game with a coworker. His opponent calls Locke "Colonel". Locke lectures him on war leadership. Turns out Locke isn't in the military, he just has an active imagination. Another coworker comes into the break room and makes fun of Locke for talking about leadership. He then asks Locke about a brochure that was on his desk. It is for an authentic aboriginal walkabout in Australia. Locke tells him he had no right to take that off his desk. The man makes fun of Locke and says, "You can't do it." Locke responds, "Don't tell me what I can't do."

On the island, Michael is preparing to hunt with Locke. Walt wants to go too, but Michael manages to communicate with Sun enough to convince her to watch Walt until he returns.

Meanwhile, Sayid hatches a plan to try and locate the source of the French woman's transmission. He makes a homemade antenna that will help triangulate the signal. Kate says she wants to help him and informs Jack of her plan before she goes out on the hunt with Locke and Michael.

At the fuselage, Claire is collecting the personal belongings of the dead passengers. She is planning to use them in a eulogy before they are cremated. She asks Jack to give the eulogy but he doesn't want to. She decides to do it herself.

Boone tells Shannon that one of the survivors, Rose, has been sitting alone down the beach. He is pretty sure that she hasn't had any food or drink since they crashed. Shannon isn't interested in what he's saying; she's doing a crossword puzzle. Boone tells her that she would starve without his help. Shannon vows to catch a fish to show him she can take care of herself.

In the jungle, Locke has found the boar trail. He knows they are close. He tells Michael and Kate to go out to surround the boar, but suddenly it turns and charges them. Michael is gored in the leg as everyone falls when they try to run away. Kate gets up to help Michael and calls over to Locke. He responds by saying, "I'm fine, Helen, I just got the wind knocked out of me." Who is Helen?

FLASHBACK: Locke is having an intimate phone conversation with "Helen". He has a surprise - he finally saved up enough money to go to Australia and take that authentic aboriginal walkabout. He bought her a ticket, too. Sadly, Helen does not have the same feelings for Locke as he has for her.

Kate agrees to help Michael get back to the beach. Locke leaves them and says he is going to get the boar. Kate tells him he can't do it. Locke responds, "Don't tell me what I can't do." He is determined to kill that boar.

On the beach, Shannon flirts with Charlie. She asks him if he knows how to fish. He says his grandfather taught him everything about fishing. She asks him to catch her one and he is more than happy to do so... as soon as he gets Hurley to teach him how.

Jack makes his way over to Rose and talks to her, hoping she will open up to him. She will not respond so Jack sits in silence next to her for awhile. She finally talks and tells him about how her husband's fingers would swell up when they flew. She wore his wedding ring around her neck for safe keeping. She is constantly rubbing the ring. Even though he has not been found, Rose believes her husband, Bernard, is still alive. Jack convinces her to join the others for the memorial service.

Claire finds an envelope with Sayid's name on it. He opens it and finds pictures of a woman inside it. Sayid cannot take his eyes off her.

On their way back to the beach, Kate climbs a tree to attach the antenna. When she gets to the top, she sees the monster knocking down trees as it charges through the jungle in the distance. She drops the antenna and breaks it. The monster is heading straight for Locke.

On the beach, Walt is learning how to brush his teeth with nature with some help from Sun. Michael and Kate return. The camp learns that the hunt was not successful and, worse, that Locke is most likely dead.

As Jack is finishing preparing the fuselage for the burn, he sees a man in a suit standing in the forest. He chases after him and finds Locke. He survived his encounter with the monster.... and he brought a boar back with him.

Night falls, the fuselage is burning, and Claire reads the names of the dead in a memorial service. Michael congratulates Locke on the hunt and asks if he got a good look at the monster. Locke says he didn't see anything.

But as we get one more glimpse into his past, we learn that Locke is keeping a secret. We find out that he was unable to walk but now he can.
