Jin is awoken by Sawyer. Jin asks about Claire and Locke's whereabouts and he is told they were to return by sunrise. Jin hurries to get out of there although Sawyer says that he is with Locke ( both of them knowing he isn't truly John Locke). Jin says he cannot leave without Sun and therefore cannot leave the island with Locke. They agree together, not to leave without her. John Locke arrives with his various followers including Sayid, Claire and Kate. Sawyer and Kate say "hi" to each other briefly.
Sawyer lays in bed with a woman who calls him Jimmy (It is not revealed when or where this is at this time). Sawyer sees the time and starts to rush to a meeting accidentally revealing a large sum of money. The woman questions him on it and he responds that she was not supposed to see it. He says it regards a potential investment although she swiftly withdraws a gun as a response. She says she can spot a conman when she says one and asks how stupid he thinks she is rhetorically. Sawyer responds "pretty damn stupid" and states it is a setup. He claims there are many guards outside. She believes him to be lying. He says all he has to do is say the magic word and the door will fly open. She attempts to call his bluff; he says "Lafleur" and many cops reveal themselves including Miles. Sawyer equips a police officer's badge.
Claire is approached by Kate who asks if the strange den was where she lived and enquires about the baby substitute. Claires says that it is all she had. Locke gathers everyone following him and begins to explain the situation. Locke says they need to keep moving for the time being and that he will answer questions at a later point. Locke is questioned about the people who stayed behind at the temple and he reveals that the black smoke killed them. The group appears mildly unsettled.
Sawyer talks on the phone referring to himself as Detective James Ford, he appears to be following leads of some kind. Sawyer enquires about a man named Anthony Cooper. Miles enters and asks who Anthony Cooper is. Sawyer says that he is a friend and Miles asks if he met him in Palm Springs on a trip last weekend. Sawyer responds in a confused manner and Miles informs him that he has a date. Sawyer is told that he has a date with Miles' friend. Miles prompts for a ticket to a game and Sawyer responds saying he doesn't know if he can get another seat. Miles says that Sawyer can tell him anything if he has a problem, seeing that Sawyer is probably lying.
Locke leads the group through the jungle. Sawyer speaks with Locke privately about when they are to leave the island. Locke reveals that he is the black smoke to Sawyer. Locke tries to justify his mass murder. He says the people he killed believed they were protecting the island from him when he just wants to leave. John Locke assigns Sawyer the task of heading over to the other island(Hydra Island), where there is a crashed plane. Locke tells him that he is to see if there are any survivors and assess the situation in hope that they can leave the island on the plane.
Detective James Ford meets the arranged date (Charlotte Lewis). They sit down at a table together. They talk about her profession, archeology and she says she gets to travel a fair amount. They jokingly compare her to Indiana Jones. James seems less inclined to speak about his profession. When further pressed he says that he was either going to be a criminal or a cop and she chose to be a cop. There is a brief romantic scene between the two of them in the bedroom. Charlotte stumbles upon some paperwork and photos within Sawyer's draw. Sawyer becomes angry quickly and asks her to leave. He does not allow her to explain.
Sawyer arrives at Hydra Island on the small rowing boat. He finds the cells where he was previously held captive. Kate talks with Sayid who appears less than himself. Kate is attacked by Claire and Sayid makes no attempt to intervene. Locke stops the fight. Locke explains to Claire why Kate took her child. Sawyer finds a woman on the island after wandering for a while. She says she is the only one left from the plane.
Miles has stern words with Detective Ford regarding his lying. He asks why he was in Australia instead of Palm Springs and he specifically mentions him taking oceanic flight 815. Jim says his reasoning is none of Miles business and Miles responds saying he is no longer his partner.
John apologises to Kate for Claire’s behaviour. Kate doesn’t seem to accept the apology.
Sawyer, on Hydra Island, talks with the woman about various things regarding their situations. Sawyer believes her to be lying and withdraws a gun. The woman whistles and several men with guns appear. Sawyer tells them to take him to their leader.
John tells Kate where he sent Sawyer. John tells Kate he knows what she’s going through and tries to explain how with a story about himself. He says a long time ago he had a mother that was crazy and he had some growing pains due to it. He says now Aaron has a crazy mother too. Sawyer is led to a submarine.
Detective Ford watches TV at home by himself. He then attempts to visit Charlotte with a flower and an apology. Sawyer is swiftly rejected with Charlotte saying “you blew it”.
Sawyer finds a tightly locked room on the submarine which he finds suspicious. Sawyer is led to their leader, Charles Widmore. Sawyer tells Widmore the truth as to why he is there. Widmore makes it clear he wants to stop John Locke. Sawyer says he will tell John Locke that he didn’t find anybody and lead him to them if Sawyer and his friends are granted transport off the island. Widmore and Sawyer make the deal.
Claire apologises to Kate and they hug. Sawyer returns to the island and tells John Locke everyone from the plane is dead. Sawyer also tells Locke about Charles Widmore and details of their setup. Locke says he appreciates his loyalty.
Detective Ford speaks with Miles in a car. He says when he was 9 years old his father shot his mother and killed himself. He says Sawyer, a conman, was the reason why and that he’d been hunting him for some time. He says Anthony Cooper was a name he’d got and when he finds the right one he’d kill him. Ford says he didn’t tell him because he knew he would try to talk him out of it. The car they are in is struck by another car and a person flees the scene. They chase the person down and it is revealed to be Kate.
Back on the island, Sawyer begins speaking to Kate. She asks why he’s running errands for Locke and he says he isn’t. He begins speaking about Widmore. Kate asks what he is going to do. Sawyer responds that he’ll let them fight it out and then him and her will leave the island. Kate asks about flying the plane and the scene concludes with Sawyer revealing that they’re “taking the sub”…
