Episode Quotes

Charlie: What ya doing, brother?
Desmond: I was just offering to fix this roof here.
Charlie: Roof? Fine. If there's a problem, I'll fix it. I'm quite handy. I was building a church before Eko exploded.

Jack: Should I talk to Benjamin?
Juliet: Sorry?
Jack: Should I talk to Benjamin? Because I'm starting to think that you're just the person who brings me my food.
Juliet: You can talk to him all you want... but he won't tell you anything.
Jack: You work for him?
Juliet: No, I don't work for him.
Jack: He's in charge?
Juliet: Oh, it doesn't work that way over here, Jack, we make decisions together.
Jack: Really? 'Cause when I was holding that broken plate in your neck, he seemed happy to just let you die. I mean, it felt like he made that decision on his own.
Juliet: You don't know what you're talking about. I don't answer to him.
Ben: Juliet? I need you.
Juliet: Can it wait?
Ben: The sub is back, we have a situation.

Kate: What happened?
Sawyer: We happened.
Kate: What?!
Sawyer: Been on this rock long enough to realise they ain't in the business of shooting each other. We did it. Our team.
(Sawyer smiles)
Kate: Are you smiling?!
Sawyer: Damned right I'm smiling. 'Cause we just got our ticket outta here.

Sawyer: There's juice pumping into this box from somewhere. Next time someone comes to pull me out, I'm gonna wait until they step in my little swimming hole and I gram 'em. Zap! They fall back from the shock, I snag the keys. Bet the bears never thought of that.
Kate: You're both gonna get electrocuted.
Sawyer: Yeah but I felt the jolt, I can take it. The other guy, he ain't gonna be ready for it. What, ya think I'm crazy?
Kate: No, I'm actually impressed.
Sawyer: Well, wipe the stars outta your eyes, sweetheart, 'cause we're gonna do this.

Kate: So, what about Jack?
Sawyer: What about him? We don't even know if he's here. Hell, we don't even know if he's alive. We gotta take care of us. It's every man for himself, Freckles.

Desmond: You might wanna, um, square your shoulders a bit more.
Paulo: You play golf?
Desmond: I'm Scottish.

(Ben shakes a bunny in a cage, which apparently falls over in death)
Sawyer: Did you just kill that bunny?

Ben: The watch monitors your pulse. If you get within fifteen beats of your danger zone, it'll start to beep. If and when it beeps, you're gonna wanna relax yourself. Do some deep breathing... some yoga.
Sawyer: If you want me dead, why don't you just shoot me and get it over with?
Ben: Because we're not killers, James.

Kate: (as Sawyer's watch beeps) What's that?
Sawyer: It's just my watch, it's busted.
Kate: When did you get a watch?
Sawyer: Look, I don't tell you everything! Just leave me alone, damn it! Put some clothes on!

Cassidy: I just... thought you could write her a letter. Her name's Clementine.
Sawyer: What the hell am I gonna write? Dear goo goo gah gah? She's a baby, she ain't mine!
Cassidy: Sawyer, she is...
Sawyer: I ain't got no daughter!

Pickett: (as he rains down punches on Sawyer) Do you love him?!
Kate: Leave him alone!
Pickett: Do you love him?!
Kate: What are you doing? Stop!
Pickett: Do... you... love... him?!
Kate: Yes! Yes, I love him! I love him... I love him.

(Sawyer cleans himself up after getting beaten by Pickett)
Kate: Are you okay?
Sawyer: Dandy. The guy hits like a girl. No offence.
Kate: Why did he do that?
Sawyer: Hell if I know. These people ever make any sense to you?

Sawyer: You gotta leave me!
Kate: What?!
Sawyer: Run!
Kate: What did they do to you?
Sawyer: Will you go?!
Kate: (as Sawyer's watch starts beeping again) What is that thing?!
Sawyer: Run. Just go. It's every man for himself.
Kate: Why didn't you fight back?! Tell me the truth for once in your life!
Sawyer: If you really love me... go.
Kate: I only said that so he'd stop hitting you.

Sawyer: (as Kate climbs back into her cage) Damn it, Freckles, don't! Every man for himself!

Juliet: I'm a fertility doctor. I'm not used to death.
Jack: What was her name?
Juliet: Cole... short for Colleen. I should have, uhh... I should have come to get you sooner.
Jack: It wouldn't have mattered. There wasn't anymore you could've done, she was... she was dead before you put her on the table.
Juliet: Are... are you just saying that to make me feel better?
Jack: I don't... I don't care about making you feel better.

Jack: Whose X-rays are those? Outside? Those are spinal X-rays and they belong to a man about forty years old. And whoever he is, he has a very large tumour on his L4 vertebrae. And I just happen to be a spinal surgeon. So, you tell me, Juliet... who am I here to save?

Hurley: (studying Desmond's structure) Is that... art?
Desmond: Nope. Just an experiment.

Warden Harris: I have to be honest, Ford... they first brought you here, I thought you were nothing more than a dumb hick. Now, I know better. You're a dumb hick that knows how to steal.

Sawyer: And I want it so there's no way she can ever find out who the money's from.
Warden Harris: Who's Clementine Phillips?
Sawyer: We done?
Warden Harris: Congratulations, Ford. You just lied and cheated your way out of prison. You're a free man.

Sawyer: What's up there?
Ben: Something I want you to see.
Sawyer: That little place you always wanted, George?
Ben: Sorry?
Sawyer: What, don't you read? It's from Of Mice And Men. You'd like it. Puppies get killed.

Sawyer: You did all this just to... just to keep me in a damned cage?
Ben: We did all this because the only way to gain a con man's respect is to con him. You're pretty good, Sawyer. We're a lot better. Funny thing is, us telling you about the pacemaker wasn't what kept you in line, it was when I threatened her. You work so hard to make her think you don't care, that you don't need her but... a guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. It don't make no difference who the guy is as long as he's with you. I tell you... I tell you a guy gets too lonely and he gets sick.
Sawyer: What the hell are you talking about?
Ben: It's from Of Mice And Men... don't you read?

Episode Goofs

When Sawyer tells Agent Freedman where Munson's money can be found, his shirt is closed so that his prison number can be seen clearly but in the next shot, his shirt is more open and his prison number is partially covered.

Cultural References

The cartoon playing in Jack's cell is the second half of a Looney Tunes short called A Corny Concerto. The short, produced in 1943, was a parody of the successful 1940 Disney film, Fantasia.

Sawyer: Sounding a little stuffy there, Chinatown. Need to blow your nose?
Pickett: Just give me an excuse.
Sawyer: Thought I just did. What I gotta do, talk about your mother?

Chinatown is a 1974 movie starring Jack Nicholson as Jake 'J.J.' Gittes, a private investigator who gets his nose slit and ends up wearing a bandage over his nose.

Sawyer: (to Cassidy) Think I'm gonna take one look at this picture and turn into Father Knows Best?

Father Knows Best was a radio and TV sitcom broadcast from 1949 to 1962.

John Steinbeck seems to be a favourite amongst the residents of the island -- Sawyer read Of Mice and Men while in prison, and both he and Ben quote from it.

Episode References

Episode title, "Live Together, Die Alone."

The title of this episode comes from a line Sawyer echoes from season 2 (...And Found).

Kate's comeback is one of the "famous" quotes of Lost; it's a line commonly associated with Jack, who spoke the words "live together, die alone" in a speech about surviving on the island (White Rabbit) and again to Michael when setting out on the fateful trip into the north.

Analysis

While the reasoning behind the Others (PDI) taking Jack is pretty obvious, there's still the question of why they bothered to take Kate and Sawyer.

One theory is that all three are needed in some way for the impending surgery Jack alludes to toward the end of the episode. Jack, obviously, is needed to perform the delicate surgery, but what are the roles Kate and Sawyer have to play?

One theory is that Sawyer is a match to the impending patient for blood type and/or tissue and bone marrow. If that's the case, his continued health and well-being (namely, that he continues breathing) are essential.

This theory also puts Kate in the position of "insurance." It's clear both Jack and Sawyer have feelings for Kate on several levels, and one way to ensure that both cooperate with the planned procedure is to threaten Kate's life or well-being. The tactic has already worked, as far as Sawyer is concerned.
