Cultural References

Sawyer's nicknames:

Sawyer, in typical fashion, bestows a slew of nicknames on several of the of the other characters. Among them are the following:

Oliver Twist: Made in reference to Charlie, this reference comes from a Charles Dickens novel about an orphan who spends a bit of time as a part of a thieving street gang before being adopted by a long-lost aunt. Coincidentally, this remark is made near Desmond, who has read every book Dickens ever wrote (including Oliver Twist).

Munchkin: Another reference to Charlie, this nickname plays on the small-statured inhabitants of Munchkin-land in L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz.

Skeletor: Made in reference to the skeletal remains of Roger the "work man," the character Skeletor was the main villain in the series Masters of the Universe. The name was fitting in both cases as the character of Skeletor had a skull-like face and bony hands covered in a thin cloak---much like the remains of Roger.

International House of Pancakes: Made in jest towards Hurley, the restaurant chain (commonly called IHOP) is famous for their variations of pancakes served all day.
