Peggy is in a car leaving the beach with about five other people. She
sits on one of the guys lap, and brings him home. He looks at her room
and says she’s a slob. She whispers that he needs to be quiet, because
she has a roommate. They kiss. He says he loves her shoulders, and she
says he never stops talking. They kiss some more, now laying on the bed.
Ken Cosgrove and his fiancee, Cynthia are out to dinner with her
parents, Ed and Lillian Baxter. The young couple shares how Pete was
out golfing with his father-in-law while they were taking Trudy to the
hospital to have their baby. A gentleman approaches, and Ken introduces
everyone to John Fiori. He gives his condolences regarding David
Montgomery, but Ken says he was there only six months and he didn’t
really know him. Ken realizes that the conversation was a bit odd, so he
follows John. John says he shouldn’t have said anything, since Ken was
with his family, but he thought Ken knew; Lucky Strike is going with his
agency. Ken reacts in angry disbelief. John says “You didn’t hear it
from me.” Ken says it’s not true, and John says that someone needs to
tell Lee Garner Jr that, then.
Ed asks Ken if he’s okay. Cynthia says it’s ad men. When they get
together all they do is brag and brag, and it’s hard not to get rattled.
Ken excuses himself, stating he wouldn’t be leaving if it wasn’t
important. He goes to the hospital to see Pete. Trudy still hasn’t
delivered. They were going to send her home, but her mother protested.
Pete sent her out for food. Ken takes Pete to the side and tells him
what John Fiori told him. Pete also reacts in disbelief.
Don and Faye are kissing in the dark when the phone rings. He says he
has to take it. It’s Pete, and he says that Ken heard from somebody at
BBDO that Lucky Strike is coming over. Don curses, and tells Pete to
call Roger. Pete says he tried, and Roger is out. Don says to meet him
in the office. They meet and confront Roger. He says no, it’s
impossible. Roger asks if somebody called Lane in London, Don says yes,
and he doesn’t think he’ll go back to sleep. Roger asks if he can get a
drink. Cooper tells him not to lose his temper. Roger says it’s ringing,
and he depresses the button that disconnects the call.
He holds a fake conversation with Lee. He tells the group that Lee is
drunk. He pretends that he is just now hearing that they are talking
their business elsewhere, and says that Lee hung up on him. Pete gives
Roger his drink. Don says tomorrow morning they are going to take the
6:00 flight to talk to Lee. Cooper says he needs a drink. Roger slams his.
Don gets home to Faye and pours himself a drink. He tells her it’s
midnight, and it looks like Lucky Strike may have gone south. The
consolidation went to BBDO. Faye tells him to lighten up on the booze,
he needs to keep a clear head. Don says every day he tries not to think
about what would happen if this happened. Faye tries to reassure him,
but he disagrees with her assessment.
Pete gets back to the hospital, and his father-in-law tells him the baby
is probably still another day away, but her mom has Trudy all worked up.
Pete tells Tom about losing Lucky Strike, and he tells Pete that he’s
had his folly, but now it’s time to buckle down with a real job, for the
sake of his family. He tells Pete there’s another place for him, but
Pete says CGC doesn’t want him, they’re just trying to hobble Don. Tom
says there is no reward in going down with the ship. Pete reminds Tom
that he is a partner at the agency.
Peggy’s new guy is a nice guy. She doesn’t want him to leave, so he
stays. She tells him she’s not usually like this, and they go back to bed.
Roger calls and tells the partners it’s over. Since his father died, the
board took over, and there’s no working with them. Bert says the clients
need to hear it from them. Roger says he’s calling from Lee’s
receptionist’s phone, since he didn’t want to have to pay for a long
distance call. However, he’s sitting on the edge of a bed.
The partners are talking to the staff. Bert reads them an update in the
company which states that American Tobacco, in a decision to consolidate
their business at BBDO, has taken the Lucky Strikes account from the
agency. Don steps forward to explain to the staff what this will mean to
them. Don says that Pete Campbell and Ken Cosgrove will handle calls to
clients. He tells them they do good work, they will continue to do good
work, and they will work shoulder-to-shoulder to do what needs to be
done, and it will be exhilarating.
Peggy comes in late and misses the big announcement. Don calls a meeting
of creative and tells them they need to be on their toes. Peggy has a
Playtex presentation tomorrow, and she’s not worried. Don fills her in a
bit more, telling her they won’t even know where they stand until Pryce
gets back. Now she’s worried.
Roger calls Joan and tells her he needs to see her. She says she’s not
flying to Raleigh, and he says he didn’t go. She tells him to go, he’s
very persuasive in person. He tells her it’s been over for weeks, that
Lee was supposed to give him a month and he didn’t. She says he should
have told her, but he didn’t and she ends the call.
Peggy is trying to make her presentation better by figuring out what a
woman wants to touch when her hands are made softer by using Playtex
gloves. Peggy gets a COD so leaves to get her purse. The delivery guy is
actually her new boyfriend.
Joan comes in and announces news from Lane. He says billings are
probably about $22,000,000 without Lucky, but he needs access to the
files to know for sure. She says he’ll be back as soon as he can. Bert
says that David Montgomery’s memorial is tomorrow afternoon. This means
that a lot of vulnerable clients will be available for the picking. The
meeting is interrupted by Don’s secretary. He has a call from a client
that Pete spoke to that morning. Al gives Don bad news. They’re pulling
their account. Don doesn’t remain calm for very long, he tells Al that
they won the Cleo for the award they did for him. Don says he’s going to
fly there so they can talk face-to-face, but Al tells him no. He hopes
they can work together again sometime. Don breaks the Cleo on the edge
of his desk and throws the remainder across the room. When Megan enters,
he tells her to not let him get carried away. Three drinks, and that’s it.
Don re-enters the meeting, where they are discussing how Trudy is coming
along. Don tells Pete to go to the hospital, that’s obviously what
matters to him. He goes to the board and erases Giro Coat, and asks Joan
what that brings them down to, $20,000,000 and change? Don yells at Pete
that because he’s distracted, he scared off the client. Pete asks who
Don thinks he’s talking to, and walks out.
When Pete arrives at the hospital, he finds Ted there from CGC. He tells
Pete that as far as he’s concerned, he’s what is missing from CGC. Jim
Cutler is due to retire, and he’d like to see Pete step into the partner
shoes at CGC. Ted tells him that he’s not Don, it’s not the wild west,
and Pete would have a full one-third vote. CGC just landed the
Alfa-Romeo account. Pete says he doesn’t drive, and Ted tells him he
will teach him.
Joan answers the door, and it’s Roger. He immediately kisses her. She
said he was there to talk, so they need to talk. She’s exhausted, and
she only wants to sleep. He wants to make love. She says she’s not a
solution to his problems; she’s another problem. He tries to insist, but
she reiterates that she can’t do this anymore. He gives her a final hug
and leaves.
Don is at work when Faye arrives at 8:00. She asks if he’s okay. They
kiss. She asks how it went, and he says it was miserable. Clients are
running scared. She says clients are always unhappy. He says she should
sent them to him, or just tell him who they are, and he’ll call them out
of the blue. Faye says she can’t do that, and Don says sure you can! Who
will know? He says he’d do it for her, and Faye says she would never
ask. She becomes angry and leaves.
Peggy is trying to relax before her Playtex presentation, but Dan uses
that against her by kissing her when she’s following his instructions.
He says a yogi taught him this technique, and it’s the best way he knows
to relax. She says no, but he doesn’t listen. She opens the door and
asks why he keeps making her reject him. He says he was trying to do her
a favor and Peggy says well, she’s not anxious anymore.
Roger makes up a story about what Lee said, and Joan doesn’t say
anything. Pete says it’s crap, sales were up 10%. Roger says you do what
you can do. Joan says David Montgomery’s memorial is in 40 minutes. Don
says Roger ignored the account, and Roger tells Pete to tell him. Pete
tells Roger that he squeezed him out of the account, and Don says Pete
would have never let this happen. “But you do what you can do” - which
is nothing. Megan enters the meeting to tell Pete that his wife and
daughter are resting comfortably. Everybody utters a very weak
‘congratulations’. They head for the memorial service.
Roger asks Bert where Draper gets off. Bert tells him he’s never been
taken seriously because he never took himself seriously.
Dan and Peggy are ready for their meeting.
At the memorial service, Don, Pete and Danny are at the memorial service
figuring out who everybody is and how they should proceed.
Peggy is giving the Playtex presentation “Playtex protects a woman’s
touch” speech, and it goes over well.
Megan stayed at the office because she didn’t know if she would be
needed again. Don asks her to send Peggy in. Megan tells him Miss Olson
is gone for the night. Megan repaired the Cleo. Don dismisses her. She
offers to stay and help, saying some day she might want to do what he
does. He accepts her offer. He asks her what she liked about the
commercial that won the Cleo. They chat a bit. Don offers her a drink,
and she asks him how many he’s had. He says four, and puts his down. He
looks at her hand on his arm. Megan says I know you’re angry, but I hope
you’re not afraid, because you will get through this. Don says she
doesn’t know that. She asks why he cares what she thinks, and they kiss.
He pulls away and tells her he can’t make any mistakes right now. She
tells him she wants him, and they continue kissing.
Roger’s wife tells him she can make his day better. He asks her what she
bought, and it’s a book he inscribes ‘to my loving wife’. She tells him
she is proud of him.
Don and Megan are reassembling their clothing. She offers to leave
first. He asks her if she wants to grab a bite, and she says she wants
him to go home, get some sleep, and not drink anymore tonight. He leaves
first. He finds Faye outside his door. She asks if she can come in. Once
inside, she tells him she got him a meeting with Heinz. He says she
didn’t have to do this, and Faye says she wanted to. They kiss. He says
thank you, and asks if she wants to stay. She says yes, and he tells her
he’ll probably fall asleep on her. They sit on the couch and he holds her.
