Don wakes up to Faye getting ready to leave for a 7:00 a.m. flight. He's
got his meeting with American Cancer later today. He tells her he has a
sick feeling in the pit of his stomach, but Faye says that's not about
the meeting. He needs to face his past. Don tells her it's not that easy
and Faye let's him know he won't have to go through it alone.
Joan's making a morning mail run. She asks Lane if he has any outgoing,
and he hands her an envelope that she shouldn't post. The partners had a
discussion, and Joan's been promoted to Head of Agency Operations. Lane
tells her that sadly, and only for now, it's just a title. They haven't
signed any new business in almost ten weeks. Joan says with a small
smile that it's "almost an honor."
Don and Pete are at the meeting. The first question he fields is why he
wrote the letter. He answers that most of that was in the letter, but
honestly, it was an impulse. He did what he had to do so that he could
move forward. They begin to discuss how to get people to quit. Don tells
them he's worked $10,000,000 campaigns where they couldn't even get
people to switch brands, never mind quit. He says the money keeps coming
in for tobacco companies via them finding new smokers. One of the
American Cancer people tells him that teenagers are a tough sell, and
Don rebuts "Not to tobacco companies." They get the teens by using a
two-pronged attack that promises adulthood, and rebellion.
Don has a very intriguing idea. The commercials would run during shows
like Bandstand. They would show the parent and teen playing on the
beach, or baking cookies. It would be indicated that the parents are not
long for this world, because of cigarettes. One of the women states that
teens hate their parents, but Don says it's not about the parent, it's
about the teen. They miss their childhood, and they don't know what
their future holds; but they know they don't want to die. They remain
silent, and Don offers that if it helps, he can guarantee that Lucky
Strike will hate this.
Don and Pete return to the office, and Roger greets them with a quip
(cigarette hanging from mouth) "Didja get cancer?" Don asks Megan to get
Mr. Cosgrove, and tells Roger that they got a meeting for another
meeting. Pete contributes that they were eating out of Don's hand. Pete
notes that even better, the board was loaded with fat cats. Don even had
an exchange with the owner of Dow Chemical.
Ken enters and asks if 'we' are celebrating, and Pete tells him that Don
get them to the top three. Ken closes the door so the men can have a
chat. Pete thought that since Ken's future father-in-law is with
Corning, they could have a foursome that includes Ken, his father-in-law
to be, Mr. Marlowe from Dow Chemical. Ken refuses. He says he's no Pete
Campbell. He loves Cynthia's dad, and Cynthia is his life; his actual
life. He's not willing to use them for business. Roger says he's going
to contact Cynthia's dad, and drop Ken's name. Ken tells Roger to do
whatever he wants, and now he's going to go service the 30% of the
agency's roster that are his clients.
Glen arrives to say good-bye to Sally. Carla doesn't think he should see
her, but he just wants to say good-bye, so she lets him go up. She
cautions him to make it quick as Mrs. Francis just made a run to the
store. Sally references being in California with her dad, and Glen fears
that's where she's actually moving. Sally corrects his misconception,
stating that they are moving to Rye. He says that he'll be able to drive
in a few years, and he can come and visit. Sally is happy to hear it.
She says she can send him postcards, she has his address.Glen says this
is not that big a deal, he says good-bye to people all the time. He asks
if she's going to Disneyland, and Sally says yes. He tells her to send
him something.
As Glen is leaving, Betty walks in and starts yelling at him. He asks
why she hates him, and she says she knows what he's doing, he could be
friends with anyone. Glen retorts that just because she's sad doesn't
mean everybody has to be. Betty accuses Carla of thinking she's Sally's
mother and when Carla tells her she's overreacting to a mistake, Betty
fires her. She won't even let Carla say good-bye to the children.
Don's accountant is going over the books with him. If he sells the
bungalow in San Pedro, that'll give him another $10,000 to work with. He
asks about the other house, and Don tells him he has an appointment with
a realtor when he gets back from California. The accountant says his
guess is Don will more than double his money, which isn't bad for ten
years. Don asks about the loss for what he had to put into the company,
and he's advised that's an investment, not a loss.
Betty calls and tells Don that not only did she fire Carla, but that
means he won't have her along for the trip to California. He says he
can't do it alone, and Betty says don't take them, they're used to. Don
erupts that they are going, and hangs up.
Peggy's friend Joyce stops by with Carolyn Jones in tow. The Topaz
people fired everyone, and Carolyn needs to make rent. Harold comes in
under a pretext to talk to Peggy, but makes himself comfortable with
Carolyn.
Don finds out how difficult it is going to be to cover the kids during
the trip, so he invites Megan to join them. He'll double her salary. She
says she does have a college friend who's been begging to see her. Don
tells her to call her, pick a night, he'll foot the bill, what does she
have to lose. Megan smiles and asks Don to please stop advertising.
Ken and Harold swing by to tell Peggy that Art Garden of Topaz Pantyhose
called him back. He was shocked and impressed that they got the news so
fast. They have a meeting on Monday to pick up the pieces. Peggy says
Monday is a holiday and Ken says it doesn't matter, they're having a
time crunch. All the agency needs to do is not vomit on their shoes.
Topaz already bought slots for the campaign that just fell apart. Ken
tells Peggy she did good work.
Don gets back to the room, and Megan is teaching the kids a song in
French, which they perform for him. They used it to sing Gene to sleep.
Don asks her why she said she didn't have any experience when she's like
Maria Von Trapp. Megan says professionally she doesn't have any
experience, but she does have four nieces and six nephews.
Don arrives with the children in tow for the meeting with Stephanie
(Anna's niece). After they sign the papers, they can go to Marineland.
Bobbi asks who painted on the wall, and Sally asks who Dick is. Don says
it's him. That's his nickname sometimes. He sends them out back to get
some lemons, and they chat a bit. Anna gave Stephanie her engagement
ring from Don to give back to him. He asks Stephanie if she wants it,
and she says no. Anna wanted him to have it.
The kids want Don to join him in the pool, but he begs off. He tells
Megan he's really beat. He sits alone in the hotel room while the kids
frolic in the pool, but then he joins them.
The whole family is sitting on the bed, planning their trip to
Disneyland. There's a knock at the door and it's Megan and her friend,
just checking to see if Don needs anything before they head to the
Whiskey a Go Go.
Henry is enraged at Betty. Not only did she fire the nanny the kids had
had since they were born, but she wouldn't give her a letter of
recommendation. He can't believe this is just about that kid next door.
Betty yells that just once, she'd appreciate it if Henry took her side.
He tells her nobody is ever on her side before he gets up and leaves.
Don is reading and having a beer when Megan gets back. He walks across
the hall and asks her to help go over the plans for Disneyland. They go
out on the balcony and look at the beautiful view. Don asks her about
her friend, and she says she's not actually her friend. They were just
roommates. She actually told Megan she couldn't be an actress because of
her teeth. Don tells her he loves her teeth, and they kiss. Megan asks
if he's sure they should do this, and Don responds that he's been
thinking about her so much.
Betty lays down on Sally's bed.
After lovemaking, Don asks if Megan was thinking about this when he
invited her to California. Don tells her he's done a lot of things, but
Megan says she knows who he is now. It's getting light outside, so Don
heads back for his room. First he asks if he can knock on the door again
tonight, she says of course. He wants to have dinner in her room,
tomorrow night at 11:00.
Art takes the meeting with Peggy and Ken. Peggy says she wears Topaz
pantyhose for work, and when she goes out. Ken says Topaz, the only pair
of pantyhose you'll ever need. Al says they'll go out of business if
they only sell each girl one pair. Peggy tags on "bad for business, good
for you." They love it. They ask for another idea, and Peggy gives it to
them. Al says "that's two". It's going to be a long meeting.
Bobby and Sally start squabbling at the diner. when Sally yells shut up,
she knocks over a milkshake. Don catches it before it all falls out, and
Megan tells Sally not to be upset, it's only a milkshake. Don looks at
her like her reaction is too good to be true.
When she wakes up in the morning, Don tells Megan he's been up for a
couple of hours. He couldn't sleep because he couldn't stop thinking
about her. He doesn't know what it is about her, but he feels like
himself when he's with her. But the way he's always wanted to feel. He
thinks he's in love with her, and he thinks he has been for awhile. He
gets out the ring he gave Anna. He wants to watch her sleeping every
morning. He asks her to marry him. She says it's so fast - and she says yes!
She has to call her mom, and then asks what they will say at work. He
says they'll tell everybody. He asks if Megan wants him to talk to her
mom and she asks him if he speaks French.
Don returns home and tells Roger, Pete, Lane and Joan that he and Miss
Calvey are getting married. Roger asks who the hell that is, and Joan
tells him it's Megan. Lane is the first to offer congratulations. Joan
calls Megan in, and they offer her best wishes. They haven't set a date
yet, but Don says soon.
Ken tells Peggy Art Garden just called. He liked ideas #2 and #4, and
they have a week. Peggy jumps happily into Ken's arms. Ken asks if they
should go rub it in, and Peggy says after you. Ken tells her she did it,
so she leads the way. They walk in on Don and Megan's engagement
announcement. Peggy is stunned, and Ken is happy for them. The phone
rings, and Megan goes back to her desk. They tell Don they got Topaz,
$250,000 account. He's very happy that they broke the 'no new business'
streak. Don congratulates them both. As Ken leaves, Peggy closes the
door and makes sure Don is really okay. He is. Megan reminds him of
Peggy, she's got the same spark. They hug. As Peggy leaves, Megan comes
in. The call was Dr. Miller again. She tells Don it's not going to get
any easier, the longer he waits.
Peggy arrives at Joan's office, and Joan purrs "Whatever could be on
your mind?" Peggy closes the door behind her and joins Joan in a
cigarette. She can't believe Don got engaged to Megan when he was having
a relationship with Faye. Peggy says she just saved this company by
bringing in the first new business since Lucky Strike left, but it's not
as important as getting married. Joan tells Peggy she has a new title,
no money of course. And if they poured champagne, it must have been
while she was pushing the mail cart. Joan says she learned a long time
ago not to get all her satisfaction from this job, and Peggy declares
that bullshit. They both crack up laughing.
Don finally calls Faye. He wants to meet her, but when she offers to
swing by the office, he says no. He wants to meet for coffee, but she
says no. Just tell her what's going on. So he does. She's stunned. She
asks Don if he's going to put an ad in the New York Times saying that he
never liked her. She hopes whoever it is understands that Don only likes
the beginning of things. Don says he doesn't know what to say, so Faye
says good-bye and slams down the phone.
Joan's on the phone telling her husband that Don was smiling like a
fool, like he's the first man that ever married his secretary. Megan is
all of 25, as if that's his news. He asks if she's told the agency that
she's pregnant, they're going to know soon enough. He says she knows all
he wants to know and she says "Yes, honey; they're bigger." He tells her
to listen to the doctor, and not worry about her figure. They exchange I
love you's.
Don arrives at Betty's, looking for Mrs. Drustan. He reminds Betty that
he had an appointment with the real estate agent tonight at 7:00. He
finds a bottle he had hidden over the fridge, and she gets out a glass
from the box next to her. Betty tells Don things aren't perfect. She
said so much change made everything difficult. He tells her he met
someone, and they're engaged. She tells him she's very happy for him.
She doesn't know why she's surprised. She asks if it's Megan, and he
says yes. The Realtor arrives, and Betty gives him the key for their house.
