Emily’s mother is freaking out because she can’t find her bright pink resumes. They get to the gym where, luckily, they got the power up again. Emily’s mother can’t find a job in a nail salon and Emily’s scholarship is in question without Marty. But Em, being the trooper she is, says she’ll take care of it.
Inside, the gym is in disarray. No spotters, kids running around, others falling over. Carter and Kaylie texting instead of working. Apparently Marty was the only coach who was worth anything. Kaylie’s parents discuss the lack of prospective coaches and wonder why he left. He was “just a man with weaknesses just like any other man” Chloe's mother points out. We learn that the gym is having financial troubles.
Payson’s parents (Kim and Mark) watch her practice. They’ve been invited to a meeting about "The Rock" Board of Governors that they’ve been excluded from. A Houston gym also called asking for Payson because they heard Marty left. Payson meanwhile, is struggling through her routine, wobbling on basic steps and falling off. As the parents say, Payson does not deal well with change. When the coach tells her to square her hips she gets fed up enough that she tells him off and runs outside. Kaylie follows asking what’s wrong.
“Everything is wrong, Nationals are almost here and the gym is falling apart.” Payson complains. They don’t understand why Marty left, he told them that "The Rock" was a family.
“A family that daddy bails on,” Kaylie quips. They want an explanation from Marty and Lauren and decide they are going to drive there themselves. Payson's parents come to lecture her about not taking her frustrations out on others. It’s not much of a lecture.
Emily discovers that Marty needed to sign her scholarship and until they get a new coach to sign she can’t get the money she needs. Leo enters and flirts with Emily. He’s not as cute as he’s supposed to be but all the girls moon over him.
Cut to the Denver Elite gym where we see Lauren being good on beam and Marty coaching. “Man is she good.” But another hears she’s a bitch so they give her the chill just like she did to Emily. Summer wonders if Steve is keeping their relationship a secret for some reason so he says he will tell her that night, but Lauren walks in on them hugging instead. Her reaction: “oh please you’re banging your secretary.” “Executive assistant!” Summer corrects her.
Kaylie and Carter flirt and they almost get caught making out in the laundry room. Carter gives her a hard time again about their secret relationship. “How many excuses do you have not to spend time with me?” As Kaylie says, “are you kidding me?” (Kaylie is in her signature pink.) Why are they home while Lauren is still at practice? Her father talks to her about endorsement deals.
Razor and Emily talk nonsense (Invisibility vs. flight which super power is better?) while working at the Pizza Shack and she once again evades mentioning the gym. He wonders if she’s an indie aging Hannah Montana type. Or in training to be a ninja. But has got to be at the Cruz’s for the meeting and Razor covers for her. To add to her mother’s ineptitude list, she doesn’t know how to drive.
Somehow the Keelers have never been to the Cruz’s home before. Shocking since their daughters are so close. Payson and Kaylie look at a picture of Marty when he won silver. He’s with Sasha Beloff, the only guy to ever beat Marty, but he’s disappeared from the world of gymnastics. The parents continued to be awkwardly hilarious. Slightly uncomfortable even. The Keelers think they’ll be offered a spot on the board and instead are asked if they know anyone with money. Emily’s mom think people are intimidated by her because her nails are “Lady Gaga good”.
Payson and Kaylie try to leave only to be saddled with Emily and Becca, reluctantly taking them to Denver. In the car they play “Kiss, Marry, Kill.” Becca wants to kill Kelly Parker because she’s better than Payson in vault. Becca asks Kaylie if she’d kiss Carter. Awkward. Leo mentioned to Kaylie that he met Emily which puts a smile on her sulking face. They agree they would kill Lauren.
The moment where Ronny Cruz and Chloe Kmetko discuss the platinum record hanging on the Cruz’s wall is priceless. “Zip up my heart wash your hands and walk away way!” That’s the song. Kim Keeler says they’re just there to listen and shouldn’t mention the Houston gym calling, but she then brings it up right away when Alex Cruz wants to take charge with no input from anyone else.
In the car they discuss what a scholarship is. They talk about how Lauren’s bars sucked only to see her perform a not so impressive performance that makes them say “damn her bars look good.” Payson is immediately recognized by the girls of the Denver gym. Payson zeroes in on Marty and demands an explanation. She yells loud enough that the entire gym literally stops to look at them so he takes her to his office to discuss this in private. Payson looks like she’s going to burst into her tears because she “gave Marty her entire life…and now she doesn’t know what she’s doing.” He tries to tell her that it was always her but she can’t do it anymore. So he changes his tact and says he left because Denver was a better club and it was just business. Payson gets fired up. “I am going to beat every girl in here…I’m going to see you one more time from the top of the gold medal podium.”
We feel bad for Marty as Payson shuts the door he whispers “you go Payson.” Payson also demands he fix Emily’s scholarship. Kaylie meanwhile confronts Lauren who is upset that she didn’t tell her about her relationship with Carter. They leave, all looking pissed.
The parents finish their meeting and Chloe tells them she’s looking for a job. Alex says Ronnie can get her a job and Chloe thinks she has made a friend!! They can be together all the time! The kids aren’t back yet (Boulder to Denver is 30 min fyi)
Lauren tells off Summer. Again. Lauren thinks Summer is after her dad’s money and that her dad will break up with her soon like he did with all his other relationships.
On their way back from Denver they stop for gas and some thugs hanging around the station notice the “Pretty Princesses and their fancy car.” They wander over holding alcohol in paper bags to harass them. With a “follow me” Payson leads Emily in a…tumbling routine. The guys back up with a “that was some superhero action yo!” Payson is sick of taking people’s crap. I don’t think I’d want to be on her bad side. To see the scene in all it’s glory and awesomeness :
Leo drops them off at home (Becca was awesomely excited to ride with Leo), but now he can flirt with Emily alone. They have a beautiful moment where he checks out her calluses. “I knew it, you don’t wrap your hands…you gotta feel your hands on the bars to fly.” Except she wore guards during her routine in the previous episode. Inside, her mom is all sleazy again with a “Kaylie’s brother is hot!” To celebrate potentially getting a job and Emily fixing her scholarship, her mother goes for ice cream. While out, she comes across Ronny making out with Marty on the porch.
Ah, so that was the blackmail! On the porch, Ronny tells Marty not to let Steve blackmail him, she’ll take care of things if he tells.
Final glimpse of the girls. Payson, in purple pajamas, does the arm flourishes from her routine with a smile on her face. Kaylie texts Carter. Emily looks at her calluses. And Lauren sits at her laptop looking at pictures of her and Payson and Kaylie from the past and then at a picture of her and Carter. Hmm love triangle?
Marty calls up Steve Tanner. He’s “done being his monkey.” Tanner’s already ruined the sport for him so he has nothing to lose. Also, Ryan Calhoun’s “Who We Are” that plays at the end is fantastic.
