We saw a new side of several characters in this episode that sparkled with fresh innovative storytelling and pitch perfect use of peripheral characters to take the focus off the series stars for a bit.
Abe (Steve's dad) and Craig (Lois' co-worker at Lucky Aide) are two of the most popular recurring characters on the series. Rarely (if ever) have they been used better than in this episode that have both chasing the skirt of Jamie's babysitter, Polly. She can't decide between and soon has the guys ready to throw down for the honor of dating the spaced out career babysitter. Though when the fight actually occurs (at the baseball convention of all places) it's way less than violent.
The subplot with Dewey and Malcolm fighting over whether a sweat shirt is really lucky actually factors into the other subplot of Lois idolizing a broke down former professional player, Pete Pukowski. The end result being the boys getting into a tug-of-war with the shirt that catches the missing Jamie when he falls from above. Though Lois is led to believe that Pete is the one that made the save.
This episode also featured a special appearance by baseball legend, Reggie Jackson, that was spot on. Very funny.
Two great plot lines (and sub-sub plot), a funny special appearance and you have a formula for one of the best episodes of the season.
