There is new life at 165 Eaton Place as Lady Agnes Holland, still weakened from the delivery, has given birth. Meanwhile, Sir Hallam Holland’s aunt, Dr. Blanche Mottershead, is on the scene and manages to keep tensions high throughout the house. In the absence of Miss Rose Buck, Mr. Pritchard is tirelessly trying to maintain some semblance of peace and order - all the while readying for the unnerving prospect of war. Against an increasingly uneasy political backdrop, long-buried secrets about the staff are revealed and gas masks are issued to all. While the house staff seems torn between patriotism and conscience, Sir Hallam stands firm in his diplomatic convictions - working to negotiate what may be the final chance to avert war. However, even as the prospect of maintaining peace seems more and more a possibility, there remains a sense of uncertainty as to just how long England will be able to sleep peacefully.
