Victorian sleuth Sally Lockhart searches for a common link between the failure of several Anglo-Baltic shipping lines, with the disappearance of many ships. During the investigation she runs across stage magician Alistair MacKinnon, who is being threatened by thugs. Also, a psychic medium who is headed into some shady business dealings, which seems to be led by Axel Bellmann, cruel and heartless industrialist.
