Sick Girl - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In Brazil, a scientist captures a large insect.

In the U.S., entomologist Ida Teeter breaks up with her current girlfriend, who is creeped out by all the bugs that Ida keeps in her apartment. Ida works as an entomologist at the McNaughton Museum of Natural History, and her co-worker Max Grubb suggests that Ida can’t keep girlfriends because of her obsession with bugs. He points out a woman in the lobby, who sits there every day sketching fairies on a pad of paper, and suggests she might be Ida’s type. Ida hesitantly approaches her and the girl introduces herself as Misty Falls. Misty is clearly attracted to Ida and suggests they go out for coffee. However, Ida notices one of her pet bugs crawling out of her pocket and secretly crushes it, then runs away in near-panic.

Ida returns home to find that the delivery service has left an unmarked package for her. Her landlady Lana Beasley’s dog is barking at the package, upset at whatever is inside. Mrs. Beasley complains to Ida about her “pets,” while her granddaughter Betty stands nearby, dressed as a ladybug from Halloween and clearly idolizing Ida. Ida manages to soothe Mrs. Beasley and goes inside with the package. She discovers it’s a large insect and calls Max, saying she’s going to invite Misty to dinner. The next morning Ida nicknames the bug “Mick,” and goes to work but is unaware that it escapes its box.

In the museum lobby, Ida invites Misty to dinner then goes out to Max with lunch at a Chinese restaurant. They’re so impressed with a rare bug they find in their food that they don’t notice the other patrons throwing up in the background and running out the door.

Ida and Misty go out for dinner that night and they flirt with each other. They end up going back to Ida’s apartment where Beasley watches them suspiciously, clearly unhappy with Ida’s lesbian lifestyle. A nervous Misty gets drunk as they watch the movie, and they’re both unaware that Mick is hiding in a pillow on the couch. Ida gives Max a call from her bedroom (where she’s hidden all of her bugs) and he tells her to go for it. She goes back out to find Misty passed out. Ida tries to tuck her in on the couch but Misty wakes up, strips off her clothing, and both women end up on the couch. When Misty lays her head back on the pillow, Mick bites her ear briefly but Misty just thinks it’s a scratch and knocks the pillow to the floor.

In the morning Ida finds Misty in the bedroom looking at her insects. Ida’s relieved to find out that Misty is also fascinated by bugs, and that her father was Malcolm Wolf, a famous entomologist that Ida studied with. They finally notice that Mick escaped his box and start looking for him, but Misty starts to ooze liquid from her bitten ear and has to lie down.

Later, Ida takes a sketch of Mick that Misty has done and shows it to Max. Max is impressed, and warns her to go easy with her new relationship. Ida ignores him and spends the next several days at home with Misty, which Beasley isn’t happy with. Secretly Misty starts eating grubs, while Beasley catches glimpses of Mick running around the apartment complex. Beasley’s dog has gone missing and she thinks Ida is responsible. Meanwhile, Misty is getting sicker and her ear is swelling, and she finds the pillow where Mick was nesting. However, Mick has some kind of control over her and compels her to lie down on the pillow where he inserts her proboscis into her ear.

Ida receives a letter from the person who sent her the package, which warns her that Mick hunts and kills mammals. Comparing the signature on the letter to one of Professor Wolf’s autographed books, Ida realizes that Wolf is the one who sent her the bug. She heads home to find Misty course and abrasive, making fun of Beasley. Beasley tells Ida to be moved out within the week. Ida gets Misty inside and Misty starts hitting herself in a fury. She collapses and Ida gets her to bed, where Misty explains she’s been having dreams of Mick injecting her with fluid.

Max calls Ida to the museum to reveal they’ve received another letter from Wolf explaining how Mick uses mammals to procreate by injecting proteins into them. Ida heads back home, where Misty is confronting Beasley in the hallway. When Beasley insults her, insect claws and eyes emerge from Misty’s face, frightening Beasley and causing her to fall down a flight of stairs to her death.

Ida arrives to find the police taking away the dead landlady and Misty causally unconcerned. Ida calls Max over for help and then goes to confront Misty, who is soaking in the bathtub. Misty admits that she’s been hiding Mick and that her father sent Ida the bug because he knew Misty had a crush on her. Professor Wolf hoped the bug would destroy their relationship but realized too late how dangerous it was.

Max arrives as Misty starts to transform. In her half-insect form, Misty attacks and kills him, ripping away most of his face. Mick attacks a shocked Ida, inserting his proboscis into her ear.

A few months later, Ida and Misty are still at Ida’s apartment. They are both grotesquely pregnant and talking about how they can each feel their many “children” kicking. As they sit together, a happy couple, Mick inserts himself into both their ears.
