In 1981 in Cloverdale Texas, the Reddle family sits down for supper. Young only child Kevin shows off his knowledge as his mother Jodi goes out to the kitchen and asks him to come along. They're preparing a surprise birthday cake for Kevin's father John, but notice a small patch of black oil dripping from the ceiling. Then John comes into the kitchen carrying a shotgun. He says that "the damned thing" has found him, then shoots Jodi down in cold blood. Kevin runs outside and John chases after him. He fires repeatedly and one round leaves a grazing wound on Kevins forehead. He finally hides in a tree but his father spots him and prepares to kill him. However, suddenly John is lifted up into the air and thrown against his truck, then flipped upside down as some invisible force eviscerates him as Kevin looks on in horror.
Twenty-four years later, Kevin is now the sheriff of Cloverdale although the small town only needs one deputy, Derrick Strauss, who is an aspiring cartoonist. It's Kevin's birthday and Derrick suggests that he get back together with his estranged wife Dina and their son Mikey. Kevin refuses and insists on living in his childhood home. As a storm starts to roll into town, they walk by a young girl, Charity, then go to the diner where Dina works. Father Tulli comes in and suggests that Kevin talk to him, but Kevin isn't interested in God. Dina tries to talk to Kevin but it's clear he's got mental problems. She insists she won't to go back to the house which Kevin has equipped with surveillance cameras, and suggests he go back to see his psychiatrist. He refuses.
A Cloverdale resident, Gabe Green, is working in his backyard doing repair work. He starts to go berserk and takes his hammer and literally beats himself to death with it.
Kevin goes back home and starts drinking while studying a locked box that belongs to his father. He doesn't have a key to open it, but as he considers the box he hallucinates black oil dripping from the ceiling onto his hand. He gets a call but there's nothing but static at the other end. The power fluctuates and someone smashes the cameras outside Kevin's house. He goes outside and sees a car drive away, then hears it crash down the road. He goes to investigate and finds the girl, Charity. She claims that the road is "alive" but dies, having been cut in half by the wreckage
Kevin goes to the hospital where Strauss reports on Gabe's death. Dr. Cohen, the head physician, reports that one of her comrades cut his throat in the middle of a conversation with her. She's concerned about what's happening but Kevin has nothing to reassure her with. As he leaves he sees his reflection and stares in horror as the scar on his forehead bloodlessly splits open and then slowly closes.
The next day, Kevin orders in a new supply of surveillance cameras and talks to local newspaper reporter Joe Litton. Litton is curious about the suicide deaths and mentions there was a similar outburst in the nearby town of Sturgess. He mentions that Kevin's parents lived in Sturgess before moving to Cloverdale, and taunts Kevin about his father's killing. Kevin is clearly furious with him. He goes back to his house and starts prying open the box. Inside he finds a hidden compartment with newspaper articles about the deaths in Sturgess. After they struck new oil desposits which later dried up, the citizens went berserk and started killing each other.
That night, Mikey and Dina are at their trailer when Kevin calls to tell them to get out of town. Dina doesn't believe him but the trailer starts to shake as the storm builds in intensity. Dina starts swearing at Kevin over the phone then moves to attack Mikey. Kevin gets there just in time and manages to stop her and she regains her control. He drives away with them but gets a call from Strauss saying many of the townfolk have gone berserk. Upset that no one takes him seriously, Strauss goes to confession at Tulli's church. However, when he talks about his cartoons, Tulli goes berserk, grabs his gun, and kills the deputy.
Kevin and his family get back to his house but other townfolk have come there for safety. They want him to do something and he gets them into the basement and sends his wife and son upstairs. The black oil drips from the ceiling and the lights flicker, and the townfolk start attacking each other in the basement. Kevin locks the door and one woman begs him to let them out, he shoots her through the door. Dina sees him and runs upstairs, and Kevin starts to go after her when Litton pounds on the door and blames Kevin for everything, saying that the "damned thing" wants him and is driving everyone insane as it looks for him. Kevin shoots the editor down then goes upstairs and tries to get Dina to let him in. She refuses and crawls out the window with Mikey. Kevin breaks his way in sees the berserk Father Tulli in the yard. Tulli goes after Dina and Mikey and insists that the son is evil the same as Kevin and his father. Before Tulli can kill the boy, Kevin arrives and guns him down.
Dina runs for the car with Mikey and a furious Kevin goes after them, but finds himself suddenly sinking into a pool of oil. His head throbs with pain from his scar and he manages to regain his sanity. Dina and Mikey try to get him free but he tells them to run. A huge vaguely humanoid mass of oil bursts from the ground and grabs him as Dina and Mikey drive away. It disappears back into the ground and down the road, the car runs out of gas. Mikey's compass spins wildly and then points straight down, and then the car shakes and collapses around them as the damned thing kills the last male Reddle.
