| Show FAQ | Why was Sandy (Amy Locane) written out of the show so abruptly?:
On the Season 1 DVD, Creator/Executive Producer Darren Star states that the whole "aspiring actress" storyline was not one that they were fond of, and they didn't feel that it was necessary to mine that cliche for further storyline opportunities. However, there are numerous other "rumours" out there as to why Amy Locane was dropped from the show - the Wikipedia page says that Locane herself pushed for more involvement in the show's promotional platform, but seeing as her character wasn't that central in the group the producers couldn't justify it, so they let her go. One other explanation could be that as part of the show's retooling, from twentysomething "issues" drama to primetime soapy melodrama, her character was simply unnecessary and kind-of boring.
Of course, the departure from "Melrose" never did Amy Locane any harm, as she's parlayed her brief run on the show into a healthy TV movie career!
