I Want to Be Free - Recap

The scene opens with Dwight singing. There is light all around him and it is a dream sequence. He goes in his dressing room and Gary Shilling gives him a necklace with the initials T.C.B. (Taking Care of Business). He is interrupted by his mother and Tony and they have a baby. A little girl named Bella shows up and takes Dwight to the woods. Bella is running away from Dwight and he comes up to a blue tarp in the grass. He lifts it up and it is him. Dwight is startled awake and he is in his office with Lt. Rice telling him that he hit it, while she is pulling on her clothes. Dwight wakes up to the phone ringing and it is Charlie. Dwight is no longer dreaming. Charlie tells that they have a shooting that happened but the victim has amnesia. Dwight hangs up the phone and looks in the mirror, shuttered by the dreams he just had.

Dwight arrives on the scene and Sutton tells that the man got shot and they don’t know who he is. He shows that he had only a pack of gum and a bus pass. Dwight wants to know why a man from the Suburbs was doing in the run down neighborhood. Dwight sees a piece of paper on the ground and Sutton tells that the man had it with him. A “hippie” crystal falls out and Dwight tells that it is a gypsy trick to steal someone’s wallet. They go see Ms. Angelina and she tells that Dwight is going to have to make a choice and that he is coming to a crossroad. Charlie tells her to come clean and she gives up the wallet she stole. The shooting victim is a Zachary Drake. Dwight asks Ms. Angelina what Zachary wanted from her and she tells that Zachary asks if he was going to hell or not.

Dwight visits Dee-Dee at the restaurant and he gives Dwight another tape of music. Dwight tells that he had a dream about his sister Bella. He tells that his grandmother did too. He tells that he will see him tomorrow. Dwight tells Lt. Rice about Zachary and tells that he lives with his wife and kid in Germantown and that he was in town for the psychic read. She tells that he should visit the wife. Dwight sees that Lt. Rice is putting her resume into a company called “Platinum Security” and wants to know what is going on. She tells that her ex-husband hasn’t given back the money that he took and that she has to take on a job that is better paid. Dwight tells that she needs to do something and she tells that she is handling things. Lightfoot tells Dwight about the Men of the MPD Calendar and tells that he wants him in it. Charlie jumps in and says that he will do it and so does Sutton, but it is clear that Lightfoot only had intended to have Dwight join.

Dwight goes to visit Noreen Drake and she tells that she doesn’t know why Zachary is acting strange and tells that he has been dead for three years. She tells that she doesn’t know him any more and that he is not himself. She tells that he goes out drinking with a high school friend and Dwight and Noreen go back on forth and finally come up with Martin Mathews as the person they sold Zachary’s old car and that he has never been the same. They visit with Martin Mathews and he is not sober at all. He tells that Zachary and him were not friends and that he bought his car off him and that is all their friendship went. However, at the station, Dwight and Charlie find out that there have been money wired to Martin’s account every moth from Zachary. Sutton comes in and has his best suit with him. There is a line of muscle-clad men in the hall and he asks one of the female officers and asks if they are all for the Calendar. She tells that they are.

Back at Martin’s, Dwight and Charlie break in and find that Martin had a shredding party and they find pictures of a trunk with a red substance in it. They recognize it as Zachary’s old car that he sold and they go around back and find the car. They open the trunk and find the blood. Martin is there with a rifle. Dwight points his gun on him and tells him to put the gun down. He realizes who they are and laughs and tells that he almost shot them. He puts down his gun and stumbles over because he is so drunk. They bring him back inside and tell him that he lied to them and that he has been taking money from Zachary every month. Martin tells that it was a bribe to not go to the police about the blood in the car. Dwight has an idea and he goes to the Evidence Room and pulls out Bella’s old file. Lt. Rice asks what he is doing and Charlie tells that he is looking at Bella’s files because he has a thought of who could have killed her. He tells that he had a dream about her the same night they found Zachary. He tells that it is not a coincidence. She tells that she had a dream too and that she was an Eagle and tells that she can’t take care of everyone. Dwight tells that Rice is leaving.

They visit Noreen again and ask about the car. She tells that she doesn’t know anything about the car besides that Zachary would not let anyone take it. She tells that Zachary was busy with a time capsule thing for his High School and that gives Dwight the idea to go dig it up. Upon uncovering it, they find an envelope with Zachary’s name on it. Inside it there is a barrette. Dwight flashbacks to Bella having such a barrette and tells Charlie that they have her killer finally. At the station, the crime lab tells that the fingerprints that they retrived from the results are that of Zachary and the doctor tells that they will run the blood that was found in the car. The doctor in charge messed it up years ago to what Charlie tells, was hitting the bottle too hard. Dwight and Charlie visit Zachary and tell that they are going to arrest him once he gets a release from his doctor. Dwight visits Bella’s grandmother and she tells that he is a bad cop and that he allowed for the man to walk free for so many years. Dwight can here the tension in her voice and asks if they own a gun. She tells that she doesn’t but Dwight sees a hippie crystal on your nightstand. He goes to visit Ms. Angelina.

When he arrives he grabs her cell phone and sees that Angelina called Bella’s grandmother the night Zachary was shot. She tells that Dee-Dee shot Zachary because of the fact that he knew it was him that killed his sister. Later Dwight is in the restaurant and Lt. Rice comes in and tells that she heard of the decision he has to make. Dwight juggles with the fact that he might have to arrest Dee-Dee too. Lt. Rice tells that he could ignore it and that she would ignore it to. He ultimately decides to arrest Dee-Dee. The doctor from the Lab tells that they cannot get a DNA from the blood in the car and Dwight is upset. Charlie accused the doctor from tampering with it years ago. Dwight is going to have to get a confession out of Zachary.

Dwight takes Zachary where Bella was found and his memory eventually comes back and he tells that he hit her with his car and that he took her to the soft marsh to let her rest because he put it in his mind that she was sleeping. He cries. The next morning, Dwight pulls up to a house with the mailbox K. Rice. At the station, Zachary is turning himself in and Dwight catches a glimpse at Bella’s grandmother. He walks up to her and she thanks him for being a good cop. Lt. Rice tells that she is staying with MPD because her ex-husband wired the money he took out of her account and put it into her account. Sutton gives Dwight thumbs up and Rice tells Dwight thank you. The episode ends as it always does with Dwight singing a song. This time it is “I Want to Be Free” and Charlie, Sutton, Rice, and Lightfoot are looking at the “Men of MPD” Calendar and it has Charlie and Dwight in it. Sutton made the front cover. In the back you can see that Gary Shilling showed up for it as well.
