The scene opens with Dwight and Whitehead at the firing range. Dwight shows that he has great marksmanship whereas Whitehead doesn’t have any. Dwight teases him and asks if he got startled by the gunfire. They get into the station and Sutton sniffs them and says that he loves the smell of gunpowder in the morning. He tells that they got Smart Phone upgrades and every Detective gets one so that they can keep in touch each other better. Dwight tries to decline, but Sutton says that they don’t have a choice. Dwight sees a man sitting down and Sutton says that his name is Ted Creskoe. He says that Ted wants to report a missing person. Dwight sits down with Ted and asks about the missing person. It is Jill, Ted’s 21-year-old daughter, who has been missing for 4 years. Ted says that he hasn’t had the chance to tell that Jill’s mother Lila passed away and says that Jill always sent a card once a month and she hasn’t written a card for a month. The last card was a “see you soon” card. Dwight tells that he will see what he can do.

Lt. Rice is in her office talking on the phone when Dwight and Whitehead walk in. Dwight says that a daughter of a man is missing and she tells them to go find the girl. Greenback tells that there are no hits on the picture. Dwight looks through Jill’s mail that Ted had and they get a location of where she could be. Dwight and Whitehead get the information that people know her, but don’t really know her. They realize that Jill was a waitress because of the people who saw her say that she had an apron on a lot of the time and paid in change. They get to the 5th restaurant and the waitress tells that she will be right with them. Dwight stops her and Whitehead asks if she has ever seen Jill. The waitress introduces herself as Lisa, the owner of the restaurant and says that Jill was her employee. Lisa says that Jill hasn’t been to work in a week. They ask where they can find Jill Creskoe’s address. Lisa says that she only knows Jill by the name of Jill Simon.
Dwight and Whitehead go to the home of Derek and Jill Simon and Derek answers the door. He tells that Jill left two weeks ago to visit her mother, but State Trooper came by and told him that they found Jill’s car and that the current took Jill’s body. Dwight gets a message from Greenback that tells that Derek has priors for drunk and disorderly and several assault charges. Dwight sees that Jill’s things are already packed up. Dwight goes up to Derek and takes a picture of scratches on Derek’s arm. He tells Whitehead of the scratches on his arm and there is something that isn’t right. Sutton tells Dwight that the State Trooper has confirmed that Jill’s car was found. Lt. Rice tells Dwight to move on to the next case, but Dwight tells that it is not over because Derek had defensive wounds on his arm. She tells him to build a timeline. She asks where Greenback is, but Dwight tells that he doesn’t know. Dwight asks Sutton to find out what is up with Lt. Rice. Whitehead comes up and Dwight asks where he was. He says that he was swapping out his gun because the sight was off on it apparently.
They go to Lisa, Jill’s boss and she is devastated that Jill is dead. Whitehead asks why she lied to them about not talking to Jill. She says that Jill told her that she was leaving Derek. She tells that Derek is dangerous. Dwight tells that they need to find where Derek made a mistake. Meanwhile, Greenback goes into Lt. Rice’s office and she tells that she is looking for the Rice/Bingham engagement party. He realizes that it is Rice’s daughter and she asks when the wedding is and he says that it is not there. She tells Greenback to keep this between them alone. Later, Whitehead looks through the car that they pulled out and finds nothing besides a thread from a sweater. Dwight finds that the car was put into Neutral when it went into the water. Dwight says that Derek was the one who killed Jill and brings him in the station. However, he says that he has an alibi for his time. Derek says that he didn’t kill her and says that they fought only and that they had that type of relationship. Lt. Rice tells Ted that they may have reason to believe that Derek may have murdered her. Ted says that it is his fault because he was too strict.

Greenback and Sutton go through the house and Greenback lost his phone. Sutton shows that he has it and says that he wants to know what is going on with him and Rice. He tells that he was told not to tell, but Sutton tells that he has to tell or he will drop his phone in the water. Greenback gives in and tells him. Meanwhile, Lt. Rice visits District Attorney Hank Miller and tells that she needs a favor from him so that she doesn’t tell about his little secret. He agrees to push the financial records. Later, they find that Derek kept Jill on a short leash and Dwight tells that Jill had a separate account. Whitehead asks if he is a bad shot and says that he has to re-qualify to take the Lieutenant exam. Dwight tells that Sutton is a great teacher, but Whitehead tells that he would never. Dwight sees that Jill had a Life Insurance Policy on her. They go to Edwin Meeks and Whitehead says that if he helps, he will get the credit. They find out that if she was going to die, the money would go to her mother. If the mother is dead, the money would go to Ted.
They get to the station and tell Lt. Rice that Ted possibly killed his own child because of the fact that he is going to get money if Jill is dead. Lt. Rice meets with Ted and tells that they have him suspected of murder. Ted says that he didn’t think it mattered and says that he never laid a finger on Jill. Lt. Rice tells that they know that he used to drink and beat his wife. Dwight tells that they are trying to find information, but nothing is coming up. Lt. Rice gets upset and Dwight walks in her office and tells her to leave personal things out of the office. She tells him to tread lightly and she realizes that Dwight and the rest of the station know about the engagement. He says that she should be happy. She tells that she didn’t know about the wedding and tells that if her daughter needs to call if she wants her to go. Whitehead goes up to Sutton and asks if he wants to go to the range and fire a few rounds. Sutton says that he doesn’t want to, but Whitehead says that he wants to observe his style. Whitehead gets a call from the State Trooper and they go to find a woman that was rushed up the river. Dwight says that the woman that they found was beaten before drowned because her skull was split open. At the shooting range, Sutton tries to give Whitehead some pointers and he isn’t listening. Sutton shows Whitehead that he is so good, that he made 6 bullets go in the same hole.
Ted gets escorted into the same jail cell as Derek and watch. Greenback is put in the jail cell with them and says that he is being accused for killing the girl. Derek tells him to back off and tells that Jill was a piece of trash. Ted gets upset with Derek and he punches him. Dwight says that they didn’t kill Jill because they didn’t care about the Medical Examiner report. They go back to Lisa’s restaurant and find the place locked. Around back, they see Jill’s dog inside and break in because the dog is telling him that he is being held against his own will. They get inside and find the sweater that thread was caught on the car door. They get Lisa in the station and they tell that murder is a serious offense. Lisa tells that she didn’t kill Jill and says that Derek didn’t either. Greenback says that the body is not Jill. Dwight says that Jill may have reinvented herself again. He goes back inside and tells Lisa that he will make sure that Jill is not going to go back to Derek. Dwight finds Jill at a motel and tells that he is going to make sure that Derek is not going to touch her again.

Back at the station, Ted waits as Dwight and Jill go up to him. Ted says that Lila loved her so much and Jill tells that she missed her and Ted tells that he wants to apologize to her and says that he is sorry for all the time that she didn’t get to spend time with her mother. The episode ends with Dwight going up to Derek and tells him to stay away from Jill, Whitehead getting lessons from Sutton and corrects his shooting and Lt. Rice calling up her daughter and talking to her after years. Dwight ends with singing “Always On My Mind”.
