Merlin is one of those shows that the BBC excels at, as other shows such as "Robin Hood" have shown time and again.

The format is quite surprising in that it almost vilifies the shows namesake as magic is outlawed. Yet, as with Robin Hood, Merlin's use of the forbidden for the sake of good is a large part of what makes the show so, if you'll excuse the pun, magical.

The show clearly benefits from excellent historical knowledge as there are few, if any historical errors of the period in which the show is set. Granted, perhaps the dragons and warlocks may be a stretch of history but who knows ;-)

So far the casting has been as excellent as the script writing and performances which, hopefully, means we'll be see much more than the one series.

If dragons, magic and history are your thing, you are certain to love this show. That said, even if they are not, I believe that Merlin should appeal to a rather wide spectrum of drama lovers.
