A woman who has beaten breast cancer twice, but now suffers from a damaged heart because of chemotherapy, and a four-year-old boy who was born missing the left ventricle of his heart get help from the medical dream team.
After beating breast cancer twice, 56-year-old Priscilla Benoit of Lake Charles, LA faces the challenge of a lifetime when she discovers that the chemotherapy has destroyed her heart. Priscilla has to withdraw from her busy life of case-managing for a volunteer organization. Her husband, Jerry, stands by her side as she prepares her family for the chance that she might not survive. “Miracle Workers” dream team surgeon Dr. Billy Cohn has a state-of-the-art artificial heart pump that could save her life. A titanium pump placed on the heart works in conjunction with the heart’s remaining strength to continue the blood flow through the body. This new device is Priscilla’s only fighting chance to live.
Four-year-old Felipe Arcila of Miami was born missing the left ventricle of his heart, a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Even Heidi, Felipe’s mother and herself a cardiac nurse, had not heard of this rare condition. Had Felipe not miraculously fallen into the hands of “Miracle Worker” dream team surgeon Dr. Redmond Burke, he would have died 10 days after birth. Dr. Burke has performed two parts of a critical three-part surgery to reconstruct Felipe’s heart and to save his life.
The amazing third part of Felipe’s heart surgery corrects the condition of a missing left ventricle by rerouting the body’s blood supply so that more blood flows through his heart. This allows Felipe a higher oxygen flow to his body, and the ability to start living a healthy and active life. The final stage is risky and demanding on a four-year-old, but is the crucial next step that Felipe and his family must face.
