Elena - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Dan picks up his briefing from a camper at a parking lot. He’s informed that Elena Maria Del Barra, an agent opposing enemy plans to infiltrate her company, is working with the U.S. However, recently she started acting oddly and sent microfilm defense plans of her own country to her contacts in the U.S. The IMF must determine the reason for her behavior.

Dan chooses Rollin and psychiatrist Dr. Carlos Enero to take on the mission, as he knows Elena and can’t accompany them. Elena is the daughter of the former president, and is a close friend of the new president, Fortuna. Rollin must find out what Elena is doing and why, and Dr. Enero recommends that he apply as much stress to her as possible to get her to react under pressure. Dan warns that an assassin, Callao, is acting independently and has orders to execute Elena if Rollin doesn’t clear her.

Elena works at a hospital and Rollin visits with her as a salesman. They flirt mildly but Elena soon begins to hallucinate the image of an Incan mask and snaps at him, then stomps off but not before Rollin is able to grab her bracelet. He goes to Elena’s house where President Fortuna is preparing to announce the success of a new cultural building program financed by Elena’s mother. Also present are her manservant, Tomas, and Miguel de Ramos, a young man who wants Elena to forsake her modern ways and marry her as per tradition. Rollin gets in using the bracelet as an excuse and meets with everyone, but they’re interrupted when something is thrown through the window. Tomas throws himself on it, believing it’s a grenade. It’s only a rock but a shocked Elena suffers hallucinations of the mask and a condor, and goes into a rant against the terrorists who killed her father, and who she claims succeeded because her father wasn’t competent enough. She rants about the terrorist ripping out the hearts of children and storms out.

Rollin goes to see Elena the next day and she stands behind her assertion despite there’s nothing to indicate the terrorists ever killed children. She then spills a vial of radioactive chemicals, seemingly on purpose, and only Rollins’ fast thinking saves them from contamination. Elena admits she’s doing things against her will and Rollin convinces her to let Dr. Enero hypnotize her. The doctor regresses her memories but she can’t remember the face of the man who gave her the microfilm, and keeps seeing flashes of temples and Incan sacrifice and condors and a mask.

Enero figures that Elena is suffering from a post-hypnotic suggestion. Rollin calls Callao and asks for more time, but the assassin says he must check with his contacts. Rollin takes Elena back to the hospital where he spots a man following them, but the man runs off after a brief struggle. Rollin then takes her home and while she goes upstairs, Tomas asks Rollin if she is acting strangely. Rollin doesn’t admit anything and Elena comes down in a new dress and flirts with him. However, Miguel storms in and pulls a gun, demanding Rollin leave because Elena called him to complain Rollin was harassing her. Rollin disarms Miguel and sends him out, then confronts Elena.

Rollin discusses the situation with Enero, who believes that Elena is testing him as a substitute for her dead father. Rollin goes to his hotel room to wait fro Callao to let him know if he has the extra time, but the man from the hospital is there and attacks him. After a brief struggle, Rollin is knocked unconscious and misses Callao’s call.

The next morning Elena calls and gets hold of the awakening Rollin. He meets with her and tells her that he’s an agent and demands to know how she got the microfilm. She runs up to the roof and tries and prepares to throw herself off a high ledge, but Rollin convinces her not to and gets her down. Elena realizes she’d rather die then do what she remembers she’s to do: denounce President Fortuna and claim he gave her the microfilm. Rollin tries to get through to Callao without success then starts to hypnotize Elena.

At the press conference that night at Elena’s home, Rollin is outside and spots Callao. He convinces the assassin to give him one hour then goes inside. President Fortuna begins his speech when Tomas reveals an Incan mask to Elena. She starts to denounce Fortuna but Rollin steps in, slips a prepared knife into Tomas’ pocket, and shatters the mask. Elena recovers and denounces Tomas. They find the knife and President Fortuna locates the secret microfilm inside. Tomas claims Elena is responsible but when he says what the microfilm contents are, without Fortuna telling him, he’s taken away. Rollin assures Elena that she’ll still be able to work as an agent and they share one last kiss before saying goodbye.
