The Money Machine - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Jim picks up his briefing from a cigarette machine and takes it out to his car. He’s briefed on Walter DuBruis, an unscrupulous broker in Ghalea, a pro-Western African country. A counterfeiter, Raf Tagoor, has hijacked the Ghalean paper and it’s believed he’s made a deal with DuBruis to pass the counterfeit money and wreck the Ghalean economy. The IMF must get the paper back and put the highly-placed DuBruis out of business.

Jim chooses Rollin, Cinnamon, and Barney for the mission. In the briefing, they go over a batch of their own counterfeit money and Rollin reveals he’s met with a doctor. Barney and Cinnamon demonstration two magnets that when placed next to specially treated paper and activated via a remote in Cinnamon’s lighter, reduce the paper to chemically-soaked scrap. Paul Giroux of the Ghalean Finance Ministry arrives and provides them with the necessary money, then examines the machine they have.

In Ghalea, Cinnamon arrives at DuBruis’ brokerage for an appointment, while Jim and Barney sets up in a warehouse with their machine. DuBruis is meeting with Tagoor to examine his new batch of counterfeit money, which he needs to cover his government debts. He then meets with Cinnamon, who has been buying shares on Ambuli Copper. Giroux then arrives to say the government is calling in the loans in one week rather than the five originally promised. After Giroux leaves, Rollin arrives to meet with DuBruis to buy some stocks, using cash. DuBruis is surprised and asks for his import voucher, which Rollin has forgotten and promises to get later. DuBruis goes out and Cinnamon asks for his home number in case of emergency. DuBruis tells his assistant Bouchet to check her out, suspecting something is up with Ambuli Copper. Rollin collects his papers and then fakes an epileptic seizure.

Barney is on-hand as a doctor to provide a diagnosis. DuBruis checks Rollin’s ID and finds the import voucher, for only a few hundred dollars. He has Rollin taken into his office where Barney recommends rest and quiet. Bouchet confirms that all of the money Rollin used for his stock purchase is counterfeit.

While Jim works on the machine at the warehouse, an intrigued DuBruis has Rollin taken to his home. Rollin claims he has amnesia and refuses to go to a hospital. Barney recommends sodium pentothal as a treatment to control the seizures and offers to return later. DuBruis takes the counterfeits to Tagoor, who determines they are recently made and almost perfect. Cinnamon arrives and asks him to relax the sales margin for her purchase of Ambuli Copper. She explains her husband is a mining engineer with the Ambuli Corporation and has made a new strike. She wants to risk $250,000 and DuBruis agrees to consider the matter.

Barney returns that night and administers the (fake) sodium pentothal to try to fill in the blanks. Once he leaves, DuBruis begins his own interrogation and Rollin says that he manufactured the counterfeit money with a high-speed copier/computer, and that it is kept in a truck and constantly on the move. Rollin then tries to make a break for it and falls down a flight of stairs, and DuBruis figures Rollin has his memory.

DuBruis forces Rollin to calls Jim and set up a meeting. Barney sends a fake teletype to DuBruis about Ambuli Copper, and the broker figures he can invest in it itself to pay his government loans.

DuBruis and Tagoor arrive at the warehouse meeting spot where Jim holds them at gunpoint and Barney slips into the computer copier. Jim demonstrates the copier machine and Barney manually switches the paper for the counterfeits from inside the machine. DuBruis gives him a few sheets of the Ghalean paper he’s stolen and it turns out high-quality counterfeits. DuBruis demands $5 million in counterfeit to cover his loans and Jim agrees, but needs Rollin as his ink mixer. DuBruis agrees to bring Rollin the next morning but brings his men in and hold Jim at gunpoint. However, a masked Barney wearing a bulletproof vest and mask emerges from the van and shoots down one man, and DuBruis is forced to leave.

The next morning Rollin confirms the paper is good and goes through the (fake) routine of mixing the ink. He then heads back to the hotel while Barney continues to take in the real Ghalean paper, then passes out the counterfeit money… the money with their special ink. Bouchet purchases as much Ambuli stock as he can. Cinnamon arrives at the brokerage to make sure his stocks are being purchased, and Giroux arrives and demands to see DuBruis, warning that he’s been warned about speculative buying before.

Jim slips the magnets into the case holding the counterfeits when DuBruis isn’t looking. The broker arrives at the firm with his $8 million to cover his purchases, and Giroux demands to see it. Cinnamon activates the magnets with her lighter and DuBruis discovers that his money is useless ink-soaked paper. Bouchet announces that the stock has paid off but DuBruis has no way to cover his purchases. Cinnamon slips out and informs the team that DuBruis will be taking a long vacation.
