The Emerald - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Jim picks up his briefing at a photo booth and is informed that plans to devalue U.S. currency were stored on a microdot on an emerald. Victor Tomar, an arms dealer, has obtained the emerald but is unaware of the microdot. He is traveling to Tangiers aboard an ocean liner, the Queen of Suez. A Russian agent, Yorgi Petrosian, is also on board and has orders to get the emerald anyway he can. The IMF must stop Petrosian and recover the emerald.

Jim assembles the usual team and they examine a duplicate emerald they’ve made. they have a diplomat pouch and proper credentials ready, which will require Petrosian to initiate a different plan then what he has in mind. Jim then has Cinnamon deal out some cards and, donning a pair of glasses, identifies all the cards facedown. Jim explains that Barney has the tablecloth rigged with sensors that can read the cards, and then he transmits the information to Jim via the earpiece in the glasses. Rollin then demonstrates he has a card sleeve device to deal the hand of cards they need.

Aboard the ship, Tomar arrives while Petrosian and his assistant Williams look on. Tomar puts the emerald in the ship’s safe and then Barney has a diplomatic pouch put in the safe with an armed guard on 24 hour watch. Petrosian switches plans and tells Williams to call Tomar to buy the emerald.

Willy breaks into the gambling salon and rigs the gambling devices, while Cinnamon claims that she and Tomar have the same suite. She apologizes and Tomar graciously offers to make it up to her. Barney and Jim join Willy in the salon and put their own tablecloth and cards in. Williams meets with Tomar and, pretending to be a jeweler, offers to buy the emerald: Tomar refuses. Petrosian concludes they must convince Tomar to get the emerald out of the safe for them.

Later in the salon, Cinnamon wins at gambling while Rollin practices dealing as Petrosian looks on. Jim wins at cards (thanks to Barney’s help) while Tomar congratulates Cinnamon at her success and the couple flirt. Rollin idly talks to Petrosian about wanting to take Tomar for his money but he’s been banned by the cruise line from playing. Petrosian takes the bait and they go to his cabin to discuss things. Rollin demonstrates how he can deal winning hands and Petrosian asks him to help win the emerald back, claiming it’s a family heirloom. He explains that Rollin and he will play against Williams, and Rollin help Petrosian win. Then afterward they split the winnings and Petrosian keeps the emerald.

Cinnamon plays against Jim and with Barney’s help he beats her and takes a diamond bracelet in payment just as Tomar arrives. Cinnamon storms off to the upper deck where she prepares to throw herself overboard. Tomar stops her and she explains that she’s flat broke.

Petrosian goes to the game after making sure Williams will be in position to tell him what’s in Rollin’s hand. Tomar offers to buy back the bracelet and Cinnamon offers him anything if he succeeds. Both Tomar and Petrosian get into the game along with Rollin while Willy starts redecorating Rollin’s room.

Barney informs Jim that Petrosian has the winning hand and he tosses Cinnamon’s bracelet into the pot while feigning drunkenness. Petrosian takes the pot and Jim departs, leaving Rollin, Tomar, and Petrosian to play out the hand. Meanwhile, Willy has finished rearranging Petrosian’s cabin with a fake wall and a new bunk, while Barney dons a sailor’s uniform.

The three men play another hand and Williams signals to Petrosian that Rollin has a full house. Petrosian has a straight flush and figures he can win. He raises the bet using the bracelet, forcing Tomar (with a full house) to bet the emerald to win Cinnamon’s favor. He insists he be allowed to redeem it for cash when they arrive in Tangiers and they agree. Rollin stays in as well and Williams confirms he has the full house. Petrosian shows his hand, beating Tomar. He rakes in the pot… only for Rollin to reveal his higher straight flush. He takes the emerald and the bracelet and quickly slips away. Petrosian and Williams go after Rollin, but Jim delays Williams as Petrosian gets to the deck and draws a gun on Rollin. Willy grabs Petrosian and drags him to the rail, then Rollin knocks him out and yells “Man overboard!” Williams arrives as Rollin explains to the crew that Petrosian fell over the side.

In Rollin’s cabin, they play a tape of motor engines as the agent wakes up to find himself seemingly in the cabin of a tramp freighter. Crewmen Barney and Willy tell him they picked him up off the coast of Tangiers, and Petrosian covers by claiming he was drunk. He sends a coded message to Miller. Meanwhile, Cinnamon dismisses Tomar as a loser and he’s left with nothing.

Willy sends Petrosian’s message while Barney drugs the agent’s coffee, knocking him out just as Willy reveals the false wall to show him he’s in his own cabin. They then put a Rollin mask on Petrosian and put him in Rollin’s bed, and remove the microdot from the emerald. Williams gets Petrosian’s message which tells him to kill Rollin and get the emerald. He kills “Rollin” and takes the now useless emerald, then throws “Rollin” overboard. In Tangiers, the IMF watches as William meets with his superiors and predict he’ll come to a bad ending.
