Jim goes into an empty sound studio and picks up his briefing on Manuel Delgado, the head of his country’s freedom party. He’s been put in prison and Santos Cardoza, a trustee, is acting as his liaison. Someone has set him up so it appears he’s an informer and he can’t reveal how he’s helping Delgado. The IMF must expose the real informer and keep Cardoza alive.
Jim selects Rollin, Cinnamon, Barney, and Red Cross officer Juan Mario Valesquez for the mission. In the final briefing they test lipstick which glows under the proper lighting, and a Care box with a special marking. Jim suspects the real informer is in the high-security barracks, and reveals Delgado refuses to escape since he’s more effective behind bars.
Rollin arrives at the prison as a new guard with Jim and Barney among his prisoners. Jim and Barney start a fight and Rollin helps break it up, the puts them in “the hole.” Rollin then meets with the commandante and makes sure Jim and Barney are assigned to the high-security barracks. Rollin arranges to go back with a prisoner delivery in two days.
Cardoza delivers food to Delgado and gets a message to deliver to the outside world. The next morning, Jim and Barney are released and look on as the guards open fire on a departing supply trick. A body is found aboard and the prisoners realize someone exposed the convict’s escape plan, and figure Cardoza is responsible. Jim and Barney are put in with the other prisoners and end up in a brief fight with the ringleaders, Klaus, Leduc, and Sperizzi. Cardoza comes in to deliver their prison clothes and Barney boasts of his escape plan. Once Cardoza leaves, the prisoners warn Barney that he’s an informer.
Cinnamon and Valesquez arrive as Red Cross representatives, while Sperizzi promises Barney that they’ll eliminate Cardoza that night in the barracks. Delgado is brought to Cinnamon and Valesquez so they can check his health. He is defiant in the face of the government repression.
Jim tries to get Barney to let him in on his escape, while Leduc fiddles with tin foil miniature sculptures and warns against it. They bring in Cardoza and put him through “the Gauntlet,” shoving him around and refusing to give him any rest. Jim and Barney are forced to participate to maintain their cover, but the Commandante comes in with Cinnamon and Valesquez and they hide Cardoza away and feign innocence. Cinnamon hands out Red Cross packages including the special ones for Jim and Barney. Klaus and Sperizzi fake taking a shower while holding Cardoza out of sight. Once the Commandante leaves, they continue to torture Cardoza until he collapses, even though he refuses to confess. Barney stalls for time, asking Cardoza about his escape plan then asking them not to kill him so he can execute his plan. Cardoza admits he was a lawyer but the other prisoners don’t believe him.
Outside, Rollin is on watch while Cinnamon and Valesquez review the prisoners’ testimony. They watch as a guard brings in a piece of silvered paper with holes in it. The Commandante takes the paper and decodes it, then throws it away and calls for the guards. Cinnamon distracts the Commandante while Valesquez starts a fire in the wastebasket. Cinnamon takes the opportunity to use her lipstick to mark the window, while Valesquez palms the coded paper.
Cardoza is given the chance to make a speech and tries to convince the other prisoners he’s not the real informer. Despite Jim’s and Barney’s efforts, the prisoners prepare to hang Cardoza. Rollin visits the Commandante and reports that his watch was stolen, and asks for permission to search the prisoners. He secretly manages to get the coded paper from Valesquez.
As the prisoners prepare to hang Cardoza, Jim assembles a pistol from the box that Cinnamon gave him, and Barney gets a knife. They take Klaus hostage and demand they wait to kill him until they escape. The guards come in and Rollin finds his watch on Jim, while slipping the paper into Jim’s pocket. Rollin warns they know about the escape attempt and leaves, and the prisoners get the gun away from Jim. Jim reveals the tin foil with the code markings and they realize Leduc is the informer because of the tin foil sculptures he made. They prepare to hang him but Jim asks them to wait until after they escape while keeping Leduc under guard.
The next morning the prisoners go to the mess hall and Leduc makes a break for it. A contemptuous Rollin sends him back with the other prisoners. Cinnamon and Valesquez prepare to leave and Rollin drives his truck into their car. Jim and Barney take advantage of the distraction and take them all hostage, while Klaus and Sperizzi dispose of Leduc for good. The IMF makes their escape as the prisoners cheer them on.
